  • I love this book

I'm nearing the 240-college-credits mark, and I've finally learned that I don't actually read textbooks. I just cannot bring myself to read them, so I only buy them if the course actually references it (it's crazy how often courses with "required" books can have their required reading bypassed and it's possible to still do well.) Anyway, I say this as a person who hates texts -- this is a beautiful, informative book. I seriously could just keep it on my coffee table. I have actually picked it up and flipped through it and found it to be enjoyable. It doesn't go into the nitty gritty of ellipsoids, datums and map projections, but it is FANTASTIC as a graphic-design-for-mapping book. I'm a GIS Analyst, and I don't regret buying it one bit.

I'm a big fan of this book. It's full off useful cartographic advice, with plenty of illustrated examples. Before I read it I was worried it might be too ArcGIS centric (given that it's published by ESRI), but all the guidelines given are generic and can easily be applied to any GIS/Illustration package.

  • Expected more

Pretty good, though I expected a lot more. Too much urban based mapping concepts. The printing was a little cheap looking. Still though worth buying and having on the bookshelf. Cynthia Brewer is obviously good at what she does and offers valuable tips.

  • Pretty and Informative

Beautiful book. Makes you want to create more artistic maps and reach beyond the default settings when using mapping software. The book outlines the basic elements that a map needs to be held to cartographic standards as well as to be pleasing to the eye. It even goes into how to make maps readable to the color blind or for black and white publishing-when funding for color maps is short.

Basic, yet very important, introduction to the rules applied in cartography. Must have for people starting with GIS and map-making. Concise and reliable source.
