I will never forget what this book has taught me.
My therapist went through a lot in this book, but reading it page by page for myself, nearly 3 years after the worst thing that's ever happened to me . . . I feel awestruck. To know that my brain has been chemically altered; to know how to navigate Complex PTSD; to know how to help others who suffer with trauma; to know the labels for what I have experienced in my body and in my mind; to know why I react the way I do when I feel like I've disappointed someone; to know that there is hope—I'm forever grateful to the author for this book.
Yes, it's a difficult book to read, because it educates you on what happens when someone or something tries to destroy your life. It *is* sad and hard to understand the consequences of trauma. But once you see what can be done to reverse it all, you're filled with so much hope, with so much light.
One of the biggest aha moments for me: "We have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body . . . Being traumatized means continuing to organize your life as if the trauma were still going on—unchanged and immutable—as every new encounter or event is contaminated by the past."
If you have never read this book, and if you have trauma in your life, The Body Keeps the Score could be a turning point for you, as it was for me.
A few more favorite quotes:
"If trauma is encoded in heartbreaking and gut-wrenching sensations, then our first priority is to help people move out of fight-or-flight states, reorganize their perception of danger, and manage relationships."
"Therapy won't work as long as people keep being pulled into the past."
"Trauma is the ultimate experience of 'This will last forever.'"
"The continued secretion of stress hormones is expressed as agitation and panic, and, in the long term, wreaks havoc with their [PTSD patients] health."
Worth a read
An in-depth, research-based, look at trauma and how it affects the brain, as well as different therapy ideas (beyond just talk therapy) that can help with recovery.
Heavy and a lot to take in but it is really something that should be read
My daughter recommended this book. It brought up to many bad memories to do me any good.
Bessel wrote a psychology book that is both digestible, easy for the layman to understand, incredibly informative, and sets out practical approaches to heal. What an incredible gift to humanity.
I'm not a reader, I don't do it in my spare time. It's paperback and feels to be nice quality. It was a suggested read and I've enjoyed it so far.
I never thought a single book could have such a profound affect on my life. It makes you think in such a completely different way that it's almost impossible to interact with people without paying attention to every single idiosyncrasy that they have and wonder where it developed and how it could be alleviated, if negative. This book forever changed my perspective on the world for the better.
Title says it all, reading it now a 2nd time!
Great read! Highly recommend this book. The body really does keep score

These bird-shaped lemon squeeze dispensers are cute but not durable. The plastic material gets damaged by the lemon acid, making them rough and pitted. The product broke easily after just a few uses. Some customers had issues with missing or broken parts. However, those who were able to use it successfully found it convenient for adding lemon juice to drinks and food.

Review of Ripple Protein Shakes: Some customers find the taste terrible, artificial, and oily, while others love the great flavor and its effectiveness for weight loss. The shakes are recommended by a nurse practitioner and are suitable for vegetarians and those with kidney disease. However, some customers dislike the vanilla flavor and criticize the use of unhealthy ingredients like guar gum and sunflower oil. The packaging can be difficult for seniors to open. Overall, opinions on Ripple Protein Shakes are mixed.
