Very disappointing indeed. The âŹ10 entrance fee seems somewhat excessive to visit gardens which really are not well looked after. I appreciate maybe March is early for a wide variety of colourful flowers however the grounds need a lot of work to make them looked cared for. The Rose Garden was embarrassing, the roses had never been primed or tidied, straggly looking specimens of plants with the ground full of weed. All in all an expensive morning to see very little sadly.
We took the bus from Funchal - arriving as it opened - make sure you are back at bus stop for return journey at the time stated on the board just inside the entrance gate.Very enjoyable wandering around in the variety of gardens and trees - some of which we had never encountered before (look out for the labels on the trees). Don't miss the pond and the tiny frogs jumping back in. Lunched on a good sandwich at the Tea Room (pricey but worth it).
The trip up there on the bus is good and the gardens were good for Madeira. There are toilets on site too. Very quiet and tranquil. Don't waste your time in the cafe though - extremely expensive and shocking coffee! Food looked very dry and overpriced too.
What a gem ,- by far the best gardens around Funchal. So peaceful, cool and pretty. A very English garden with pools, topiary, roses, herbaceous borders but some exotic plants too. Well maintained and quiet. Off the beaten track which means few discover it which is a real shame. There is a bus from the centre - it is about 20/25 mins by car. A taxi will cost you about 35 euros return but it is worth it - tea room there as well.
We went to the gardens today. They are lovely and relaxing and we really enjoyed our visit. The camellias, bird of paradise and tree ferns were especially lovely. To get there we got the number 36 bus from the bus station, near the bottom cable car stop. We bought a ticket for just under 2euros from the bus driver. You can get cheaper tickets from the ticket booth, but that had a queue. We stayed on the bus to the end stop, where the gardens are signposted and we had a short downhill walk. The number 37 bus also goes to the gardens and drops you right outside the gate. So it is very easy to get there.
Disappointed by visit in early June 2021 - recommend you give it a miss and look elsewhere. Nothing much interesting in the way of special plants and those that were were not even given names. Most of it looked rather dried up and Iâll cared for, It needs serious attention and investment and a capable gardening team to restore. Even then it would be a long project.
