  • Easy to Use and Engaging

This was a great coding introduction for my grandsons. The step by step instructions were easy for them to follow, and required minimal guidance from an adult. The boys are 8 and 10. Children use the Scratch website to drop code following the detailed instructions. Our grandsons use computers daily for school, so they are very comfortable navigating different sites, and I think that helped with the comfort and success of this as well. Fun book, educational and informative. Great starter book for kids looking to get hands on with coding. This came in particularly handy as they have been home from school for several months due to the global pandemic; it gave them something new and interesting to do.

  • A good book for kids wanting to learn code or inquisitive about how video games work.

A helpful book on beginning coding. I was apprehensive about reviewing a book coding (even one for children) when I knew absolutely nothing about the subject.

Coding for Kids: Scratch is amazing. I actually built a simplistic video game. I was so proud. I believe that is how kids will feel, as well. Matthew Highland takes the reader step-by-step through the process. Using the website Scratch, the reader is able to use drop-n-drag coding. There is so much packed into this book, like instructions and tips on how to use paint editor and adding sounds.

This book is very good for children wanting to learn code or inquisitive about how video games work.

I received an ARC from Callisto Media Rockridge Press through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review and am under no obligation to do so.

  • Good Introduction to Scratch

This is very well written, in an approachable way that works for both kids and adults. There are probably tutorials online that have the same information, but sometimes it's nice to get the basics in a book without having to dig around.

Our kids use scratch at school, and wanted to get them into doing it a bit more at home, and this helped both me and them in getting that setup. Nice and approachable book.

  • This is definitely written by a teacher

This book is easy to follow without dumbing things down for kids. My daughter loves it and it is easy to set goals for her learning. We do a chapter every day and that is manageable for both of us (she can code all day on scratch if you let her). I am glad the author wrote this book. After my daughter finishes this one I hope to buy her the python one.

  • really good book on kid coding with Scratch

I didn't know what Scratch was before this book, but it's a pretty cool drag and drop computer programming language that kids can program right in a browser window. It works pretty well and this book does a good job of teaching code with scratch. The author is obviously very knowledgeable on the subject. It could use a little more editing because there are places where he assume's you'll know something that you may not. The programming challenges have a few places where I was confused with the instructions or something could be done better. But really overall it's a great resource and I feel that it might be even better in a future update or edition.
