it's short and to the point. it's full of handy advice nuggets. It will help you as a solo indie developer. it won't actually help you program a game or anything like that (how could it in that small space?) but it *will* help you to know what to do, what questions to ask, and what path to follow.
A lot of great advice, but I've been thinking about making a game since I was a little kid and it's all pretty basic stuff.
It goes over stuff like motivation and scope creep.
This book is mostly inspirational. It does not contain any concrete details about game design or development. It's simple stuff like "choose an engine," "search the web," etc. I was hoping for more concrete advice on things like creating a game design document, where to promote a game, etc. It's not a bad book by any means, but I didn't come out of it feeling like I knew more than I did going into it.
This was exactly what it set out to be. Very enjoyable, informative (at a high level), and most of all motivating. I also might be biased as a long time LostCast listener who also enjoyed A Wizards Lizard.
This is a really encouraging read for anyone having the trouble making the leap. If you read between the lines, it's applicable to nearly any artf-orm. An alternative title might be "Zen and the Art of Indy Game Dev," as it's less of a "how to" manual and more philosophical on the topic of getting started. You won't learn how to write any GLSL, but it lays out everything that it takes to ship a game and develop a career from nothing. Everything after reading it is basically Google-able.
This book has so much amazing practical advice for aspiring game developers, it's wonderfully illustrated and full of inspiring quotes and advice, would highly recommend for any one looking to get into game development
