From Movie Magic to Dining: Bubba Gump Through Customer Eyes

In Forrest Gump, Bubba spends half the war talking about shrimp: boiled, fried, gumbo, scampi, the whole list. He never gets to start his shrimp business, so Forrest does it for him. That was supposed to be the end of a fictional story. Instead, a real company took the name, and since the first Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. opened in Monterey, California, in 1996, the restaurants have spread to tourist hotspots around the world.

It is an unusual business when you think about it. People don’t walk in only because they are hungry. They walk in because of a movie released decades ago, which means every plate has to compete with a memory. So does a fictional shrimp company hold up as a real restaurant? Do people come back for the food, the nostalgia or simply the view?

We let the diners answer, using the customer feedback they had already left behind.

Methodology

We collected 2,500 pieces of customer feedback from Google Maps and Tripadvisor, 500 for each of five Bubba Gump locations: New York, Santa Monica, Cancún, Hong Kong and San Francisco. Then we analyzed it in Kimola.

Kimola grouped the feedback into themes and measured the sentiment of each theme separately, so a diner who loved the view but not the bill counts on both sides. Research Dimensions took it further: Motivations showed why people choose Bubba Gump, Pain Points showed where the experience falls short, and Personas showed who is sitting at the tables.

No reservations needed, and nobody had to wait for a table.

Why People Choose Bubba Gump

Kimola’s Motivations dimension reads each piece of feedback for the reason behind the visit. Six themes shaped how diners described Bubba Gump, from why they came to what got in the way:

1. Dining Experience and Atmosphere

Customers enjoy the casual, vibrant dining atmosphere with decor inspired by Forrest Gump. The nostalgic setting makes it a popular choice for families and friends who want to gather and share a meal.

2. Tourist Attraction and Scenic Locations

Bubba Gump’s locations in tourist hotspots like Times Square attract visitors looking for a memorable meal. The combination of seafood and a lively ambiance adds to the enjoyment.

3. Food Variety and Quality

The diverse menu, with seafood options alongside American staples, appeals to many diners. Guests appreciate the variety, especially the shrimp dishes that define the brand.

4. Service Quality and Family-Friendly Options

While service quality can vary, many customers praise the friendly staff and family-friendly atmosphere. Bubba Gump is also known for its kid-friendly menu, which makes it an easy choice for families.

5. Interactive Features and Overall Value

Customers enjoy the interactive elements tied to Forrest Gump, such as movie trivia. Opinions on pricing vary, though: some diners feel the experience is worth the cost, while others find it overpriced.

6. Reservations and Wait Times

Customers have raised concerns about the reservation system and wait times for both seating and food, especially during peak hours.

Read together, these themes describe a restaurant whose strengths are the setting, the story, the staff and, in many places, the food, and whose weaknesses are price and waiting. That split shows up again at every location below.

Discovering Bubba Gump’s Most Memorable Spots

Forrest said life is like a box of chocolates. Bubba Gump’s locations are a little more predictable, but they are not identical. For each one, the percentages below show how positive the feedback is on a specific topic, which is why the same restaurant can score 99% on its view and below 50% on value for money.

New York: Times Square’s Most Vibrant Seafood Spot

Located in the heart of Times Square, this Bubba Gump offers an energetic, tourist-friendly atmosphere that blends seafood with Forrest Gump nostalgia. Atmosphere and decor received 84% positive feedback, with many diners praising the lively ambiance and themed experience.

Pricing remains a key issue, however, as only 32% of visitors found the restaurant good value for money. Long wait times were another frustration, receiving just 24% positive feedback, with customers noting significant delays even with reservations. Despite these drawbacks, 87% of guests appreciated the friendly staff, making service one of the location’s biggest strengths.

Santa Monica: An Unforgettable Oceanfront Dining Experience

Situated directly on the Santa Monica Pier, this location is known for its oceanfront views and relaxed, beachside atmosphere. Customers love the setting, with a 99% positive sentiment score, making it one of the most visually appealing Bubba Gump locations.

The restaurant also excels in service quality, with 96% of the customer feedback describing positive experiences with attentive, friendly staff. Value for money received mixed feedback, however, with only 46% of customers satisfied with pricing versus portion sizes. Still, for seafood with a sunset backdrop, Santa Monica’s Bubba Gump remains a standout choice.

🏝 Cancún, Mexico: A Seafood Feast by the Caribbean Shores

Cancún’s Bubba Gump offers a tropical, laid-back dining experience with beach views, making it a favorite among tourists looking for a memorable meal. The restaurant received 92% positive feedback overall, one of the highest satisfaction rates across all locations.

Food quality stood out the most, with 95% positive sentiment, as diners praised the freshness and generous portions of dishes like Cajun shrimp and coconut shrimp. Family-friendliness was rated at 98%, making it a preferred choice for those dining with children. Pricing received a lower approval rating, with only 55% of customers feeling they got good value for their money. Even so, the Cancún location remains a must-visit for seafood in a picturesque setting.

Hong Kong: A Unique Cityscape Dining Experience

Perched atop Victoria Peak, Bubba Gump Hong Kong offers one of the most striking dining views in the city, attracting both tourists and locals. The view and ambiance were rated 96% positive, making the setting the restaurant’s strongest selling point.

Service was well received at 85% positive sentiment, but pricing and value were a challenge, with only 39% of guests satisfied with the cost-to-quality ratio. Some visitors noted that while the seafood was fresh and flavorful, certain menu items felt overpriced compared to other options in the area. Still, the views and attentive service make this location a must-visit for those exploring Hong Kong.

San Francisco: A Seaside Dining Experience to Remember

Nestled in Fisherman’s Wharf, Bubba Gump San Francisco offers panoramic views of the Bay, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. The location was highly praised, with 95% positive feedback, making it one of the best spots for a meal with a view.

Food quality was another highlight at 85% positive sentiment, with diners frequently complimenting the clam chowder and coconut shrimp. Service achieved a 100% positive sentiment score, showing how much staff attentiveness contributed to customer satisfaction. Long wait times, however, were a recurring issue with 89% negative sentiment, as peak hours often bring extended delays. Even so, San Francisco’s Bubba Gump remains a top choice for seafood lovers looking for a scenic, lively atmosphere.

Across all five locations, the same pattern holds. The view, the atmosphere and the staff win diners over almost everywhere, while value for money stays below 60% positive at every location where it was reported, and wait times drag down New York and San Francisco. Bubba Gump sells the setting very well. What customers push back on is the bill and the queue.

Meet the Bubba Gump Personas

So who is actually sitting at the tables? Kimola’s Personas dimension groups diners by the needs and priorities they reveal in their own words, and it found seven very different crowds at Bubba Gump. Each persona also comes with a net promoter score, and this is where it gets interesting: the same restaurant scores 100% with one group and -86% with another.

The Family Fun Seeker – "Laughter, Chaos, and Shrimp!"

This persona is all about family bonding. With a net promoter score of 90%, they are the cheerful group that fills the restaurant with laughter and kid-friendly chaos. They love celebrating birthdays, sharing goofy moments and a setting where everyone, even picky eaters, can find something to enjoy. Who doesn’t love a good plate of shrimp while the kids are busy making memories?

The Critically Discerning Foodie – "Does This Shrimp Impress Me?"

Enter the culinary detective. This persona approaches the meal like a Michelin judge, making sure every shrimp is perfect and every flavor hits the mark. With a net promoter score of -86% (yikes), they are not shy about sharing critiques, from the plating to questionable ingredient choices. They love good food, but their expectations are as high as the prices on the menu.

The Casual Diner – "Good Food, Good Vibes"

Looking for a relaxed spot after a long day of sightseeing? Meet the Casual Diner. With a net promoter score of 80%, they want a simple, no-fuss meal: good food, friendly service and a cozy atmosphere. No frills needed, just a tasty plate of shrimp and a chance to relax.

The Value-Conscious Tourist – "Is This Worth It?"

This persona is the savvy shopper of the dining world. With a net promoter score of 37%, they are always looking for value. They study menu prices and portion sizes like treasure hunters looking for the best deal. They might come for the restaurant’s iconic status, but they want to be sure they are getting their money’s worth.

The Culinary Explorer – "Surprise Me!"

Adventurous and open-minded, the Culinary Explorer wants to try everything on the menu. With a net promoter score of 82%, they thrive on discovering new flavors and sharing their experiences on social media. Every meal is a chance for a new story, and they never say no to an Instagram-worthy moment.

The Nostalgic Movie Buff – "Forrest Gump Brought Me Here"

This persona has a soft spot for classic films, especially Forrest Gump. With a net promoter score of 100%, they are here for the food and the nostalgia in equal measure. Expect them to reminisce about favorite scenes, snap photos with the decor and quiz the staff on movie trivia over a hearty meal.

The Event Celebrator – "Every Meal is a Party!"

This persona believes every day is worth celebrating. With a net promoter score of 100%, they are the life of the party, ready to throw confetti (or shrimp) for birthdays, anniversaries or just because it’s Tuesday. They want a vibrant atmosphere, excellent service and a menu that turns an ordinary meal into an occasion.

Put the scores side by side and the earlier pattern sharpens. The personas who come for the story, the celebration or the family time are Bubba Gump’s biggest promoters. The ones who come to judge the food or the price are the hardest to win over. For a themed restaurant, that is a strategic question in itself: keep investing in the experience it already sells well, or close the gap with the diners who judge it by the plate and the bill.

What Diners Are Really Saying

Just like Forrest’s journey, a meal at Bubba Gump is a mix of nostalgia, scenery and plenty of shrimp, from the neon of Times Square to the ocean breeze in Santa Monica. Guests love the friendly staff, the fun atmosphere and the views. What keeps holding the experience back is the same almost everywhere: the price and the wait.

That is exactly the kind of finding an average rating hides. A rating would tell Bubba Gump it is doing fine. Customer feedback, read at scale, tells it which diners love it, which ones it is losing and why, location by location. That is the kind of understanding market research is supposed to deliver.
