I am a Peter Attia fan and have loved reading this book. I have enjoyed listening to his podcast for the past year or so when I discovered him and in fact I reference him so often I never have to even mention his last name in conversation with my family.
This book helped me to understand things in a more linear way beginning with his background, in conjunction with, his vast amount of medical knowledge. I am not in the medical field and am just interested as a lay person in the science and art of feeling as best possible. Quite a lot of the podcast goes over my head but the book allows me to comprehend more information. Audio is usually my best approach to learning but this book has shown me to look back at reading for education.
One of my favorite parts of reading this is that Dr. Attia does not dumb down the material and instead we rise up to understand it even if takes a few times going back over it! Everyone that has been to my house and even ready the first few pages and heard me talk about it, has gone home and ordered a copy. They asked to read mine when I am done and I, who normally shares and passes 99% of my books along said no- I am keeping it! I have less than 10 books and don't like clutter but this one will stay in my small but very special library.
Thank you!
I bought this book because I was excited to learn something new about health and longevity. Sorry to say this book is elementary. Anyone who knows anything at all about health and nutrition will find this book to be a waste of time and money. What’s worse is that Attia is a TERRIBLE writer. My god, get to the point!! His long winded style is so awful, his editors should be fired and never work again.
The greatest gift to our loved ones is the increase of the lifespan with with balance health-span. A must read textbook that I have committed to reading again in order to absorb all the wonderful information it details and it’s insightfulness.
Good
Just spent the first 2 hours skimming and appreciating his thorough and compreshensive book. Have excellent health at 86. Now I am working up a compreshensive program for the rest of my life. Most people think I am 15 to 20 years younger. I take only one prescription drug, NP Thyroid, 120 mg/day, thanks to removing 1/2 of a thyroid lobe about 35 years ago. But, I take a ton of supplements, including Catalyn and Cardio Plus, from Standard Process. Their food based supplements are probably some of the best in the US. Tending to my wife the last 2 years as she went down hill, I neglected my health (unnecessarily). But, now that she is gone, I can focus on me.
I want to become the healthiest I possibly can, by returning to bike riding, weight lifting and table tennis. But, this is where Dr. Attia comes in. With his amazing background is various rigorous training programs and exceptional results, he has a personal perspective that few , if any, other authors can match. With 482 pages, including a much appreicated index, he expands on a lot of studies and info, allowing the reader to make their own decisions. I am not concerned at all about my lifespan, but very concerned about my healthspan. I see too many people using walkers, and barely alive, unable to "enjoy life." If I can't continue to enjoy life, I don't want to be here. Last November, I started a table tennis group at the local senior center. As Dr. Attia points out, it is up to me to control my destiny. About 5 years ago, my DEXA scan put me in the top 1%, for my age. That's thanks to weight lifting, on and off, since high school. Wonder where I am now? His emphasis on exercise, and how to do it, is worth the price of the book alone. Everything else just adds to the value of the book. My intention is to modify the Keto Diet, that I started on January 1st this year, and focus on the valuable "essential" health issues. Keto is unnecessarily restrictive. Dr. Steven Gundry's book: "Unlocking the Keto Code," dispells a lot of false Keto restrictions. I highly recommend both Gundry's and Attia's books. Outlive may get into the top 5 health books that I have purchased in the last 20 years. And there have been over 100. I hope to update this review as the months roll by. Hopefully, by this Christmas, I will be way ahead of where I am now, and can add more useful information. I started and ran a heath club, "Achieve Better Health Club, for over 7 years in The Villages, Florida. I was able to watch, and help, many people improve their quality of life, by making even simple changes in their life style. So can you! OUTLIVE will help. Good luck, and YOU COME FIRST.
Every chapter was balanced with story, a good level of technical detail and presented in a way to make reading it enjoyable and informative. Great work Peter!
I’ve been in the health and fitness industry for almost 20 years. I’ve read countless books on the subject and hands down this is the best book I’ve read. Dr. Attia does an amazing job of explaining his message in language that is accessible to just about everyone. I’ve purchased copies for all my clients and loved ones.
Dissappointed. Was really basic information and if you're an avid listener of Huberman?attia podcasts this is just an intro book to lifestyle, diet changes. Also Peter is shilling statins and other big pharma questionable treatments. If you're into Mercola type information this book is disappoiting. Take my review with a grain of salt. Im a fitness/health freak. This book might be good for those eating the Standard American diet and fast food, smoking, sedentary life.
I’ve been following Dr. Attia for a couple years now and was delighted to see my pre-ordered book arrive on my doorstep. It did not disappoint. His podcasts can be a bit technical so I was concerned the book might be as well, but it turned out to be a nice read for me as a layperson in the field of longevity.
Few specialists take as much time and effort to dig as deep into the research and science as he does, but emerges with a version that is applicable to anyone and understandable to most. Each chapter is full of nuggets that anyone can apply to their own life. I especially appreciate his insistence on exercise. He courageously opens up to some of his personal struggles in the last chapter, which ties everything together quite nicely.
A must read and must have for those interested in getting the most out of life and living it as long as possible.
I have been talking about this book to everyone I know and their brothers. Several people have bought it since. I feel like it scientifically provided the missing link that I needed on my health journey. It has given me a fantastic inspiration on where to go in order to live my best life moving forward. I am going to start focusing on protein, grip strength, rucking, and balancing my foundation moving forward. I've listened to the audio 2+ times and am now almost done reading through the physical copy. Thank you mr Attia for bringing this book into existence and thank you to his wife who surely got him through it.
Listened to the audible version twice. Bought the print version for my daughter who is a personal trainer. Lots of references. Credible. Practical.
The information is this book can be life changing-
2.0 healthcare approach.
Dr Attia does an excellent job summarizing much of the longevity literature and transforming it into tangible strategic and tactical maneuvers to help one create a longer health span. What I particularly appreciated was his thoughtful discussion on cardiovascular disease, and exercise. And as a psychiatrist I deeply admire his openness around his childhood trauma and dedication to his emotional journey to seek help and come to terms with it.
The book is mostly about the author's or his patients' experiences and how they were managed. I kept waiting, and expecting, to get to a summary of specific advise, but it doesn't exist. The book covers some good topics and information, and it is possible to take actionable advise from it, but you have to take it from the many stories, or do further research on your own. For the most part it is not offered. I never listened to his podcasts because they were too long. Wish i'd skipped this book for the same reason.
I found the book to be excellent. It covers the four horsemen of a shortened life or low quality existence. It is clearly researched based. And I love how Peter shares his own story of transformation. So why not 5 stars. I think it deserves 5 stars in all aspects, except for me, it didn’t draw me in. I could wait to get back to it (as opposed to couldn’t wait). So that is me being hypercritical. It was an academic slant (and is intended to be) so I felt less engaged to pour through the pages. The book has given me some new insights for sure. And is should be a mandatory read, no question. But I find Peter’s podcast (and Andrew Huberman’s) more engaging than this book. Those, I can’t stop listening and can’t “put them down.”. My final thought… get this book… it may just save (or extend) your life.
Finally a deep dive into understanding how to actually live a longer and lead a healthier life. Well written with clear insight and direction to get you started. I have bought several copies to hand out to my clients also.
If you are looking for a book that will help with life longevity and healthy lifestyle, look no further! I am a 69 year old that was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and refused to start medication! I am taking my life in a new direction and beating this myself! This book is a God send and motivator on my quest to live the longest, healthiest life I can! I will not be a statistic! I have purchased 5 others for family and friends and one for my doctor! Thank you Peter Attia, you may have saved my life! ❤️
Very interesting book which delivers on its content.
The quality of the physical book is pathetic. Pages are cut unevenly...paper is of poor quality...and because of the cut of the pages, the text and margins are uneven from page to page. Clearly, this is print-on-demand which I generally don't mind if done properly, but at this price point, I expected better, particularly since AMZN has its own print facility.
Finally, the book took two weeks to arrive, despite my being a Prime member.
Disappointing.
I really enjoy Dr. Peter Attia's podcasts. He asks intelligent questions and converses on topics of interest in health and longevity. I had high expectations for Outlive, his book on Longevity.
Outlive is a large book but such good read that it won't take too long to finish. It provided background on Peter's life and mentality but was light on details of the key topics I longed to hear Peter discuss in greater detail than one might hear in his podcasts.
For instance, Peter takes a contradictory position to others in the longevity field by advocating eating more protein, but he really doesn't give us rationale as to why. A recent podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick provides answers and his rationale is spot-on...just too bad it wasn't covered in the book.
I commend Peter on sharing some intimate details of his life. He didn't have to, but it really helps those who follow him to understand the man behind the voice.
Claims to want to change medicine but still has all the hallmarks of an indoctrinated medical student. Doesn’t believe in herbs and supplements. Doesn’t believe in obvious superiority of keto diet. Pushes tons of big pharma medicines, some that average people cannot get from their PCP. Also, too many words and very little content, like everyone else said.
Dr. Attia's long-awaited opus on longevity is finally here and is an erudite, meticulously researched, and accessible blueprint for patients and clinicians interested in living a longer, healthier, and happier life. Both scientific and deeply personal, it is a call to arms for those frustrated with the shortcomings of Medicine 2.0.
A brilliant and much-needed introduction to Medicine 3.0, I recommend this book without reservation to my patients and colleagues. Bravo!
Sorry but I couldn't even get all the way through this. Way more information than I needed or wanted on issues that don't directly support the claims, and not enough information--certainly not ground-breaking information--on the claims themselves, i.e., showing us how to "outlive." Entire branches of established nutritional and health studies are simply dismissed as ridiculous, rather than constructively addressed. The reader is even told that if they feel the author dismissed something like this, they should just put down the book and go exercise. OK. I put down the book after fast-forwarding to the end of the remaining chapters and finding nothing new here.
Dr Peter Attia changed my life
I started listening to his podcast 1 year ago
he is not advertising any company, so I felt I could trust him
he changed my wife mind on HRT and improved our life dramatically
the book is a manual for humans and you can get all information in one place
I also got the audio version
I recommend both
thank you Peter
This book explains some very complicated topics in a manner that your regular person understands. I really enjoyed this book and learned a TON.
I understand his reasoning for all the technical information but most folks will give up on the read. I got the most out of the summaries
Dr. Attia makes it clear that getting in ahead of maladies that affect nearly ALL PEOPLE in their final "marginal decade" is the surest way to avoid having a "marginal decade". To do this, he lays out a blueprint to follow, which is not to say a prescription as that requires assistance of one's physician. But, as the patient armed with this blueprint, you can guide your physician to be more proactive in caring for you, which is the central tenet of what Dr. Attia calls "medicine 3.0".
While I enjoyed all parts of the book, I had some critical comments, specifically about the section on nutrition. While I didn't disagree with anything that Peter writes, I felt he could have been more specific and explained the dangers of processed foods, sugar and not just taken the stance that is all about caloric restriction.
The real eye opening part of the book is the last chapter. It was incredibly courageous of Peter to be so vulnerable and share such a sensitive part of his life. Throughout the book, Peter shares his story in a vulnerable way, but nothing can prepare you for the final chapter. The book is worth reading just for that chapter and the epilogue. I hope everyone who buys the book reads that chapter and epilogue (maybe even before the rest of the book).
Overall, a wonderful wonderful book.
Love the evidence based ideas and concepts that Peter continues to unfold in a functional and useful manner. Practical applications to optimize life’s necessary daily routines to live a more fulfilling and peaceful existence. Thank you for being brutally honest about what it takes to live long, but more importantly why you would want to even do such a thing.
I bought the audiobook but returned it so I can't write a review. I got this because Hugh Jackman suggested it in one of his video clips. I made it to through chapter 5 before giving up. I kept waiting for something useful. Sure, he says that nothing is one size fits all but I expected him to share a framework. Instead he went into levels of detail that were uninteresting and so convoluted it was challenging to pick out what was important or what his actual purpose for sharing was. He talks too much and repeats himself. I still don't really understand why this book was written.
THE GOOD DOCTOR LOVES HIS IDEAS AND FEELS OTHERS ARE OF LITTLE USE.

This ADHD planner is overwhelming for some users but helpful for others. It has a hardcover binding and peculiar entries to keep users interested. Some suggestions for improvement include removing the ADHD label from the cover and providing an undated format. The planner is praised for its ability to help users establish routines and stay organized. However, the three-month duration and lack of instructions can be challenging for some users. Overall, it is a valuable tool for individuals with ADHD.
