  • I just learned a lot of interesting and depressing things about my supper

Seriously well-researched and well-written dive into the history of groceries and grocery stores and the implications of Americans spending only 10% of our budgets on food. I’m probably too stunned to be coherent at the moment. I didn’t know the supply chain brought us shrimp via torturing the shrimp and slave labor. And it’s depressing that any grocery store that tries to be ethical or innovative gets bought out by a bigger company that just wants to make the most money it can. Interesting on Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods’ history. A fascinating read.

  • candor about the reality of workers’ lives and our ignorance of the subject

This is a book with horrific information about the awful unfairness of workers’ conditions and compensation; the health risks of food produced that isn’t fit for human consumption but promoted as though it were; and, the lack of integrity by food producers and the willful blindness toward them by the grocery colossus. It is a modern day version of Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” which did so much to protect the American people by the passage of laws assuring the safety of our food supply.

  • What a find!

I will read every book written by authors such as John Krakauer and Michael Lewis. Finally, in this book I have found another follow-worthy author. The writing is engaging, fresh, and funny -- and never boring. The author went undercover at a Whole Foods fish counter, likened to a dead fish morgue. He entertainingly reviews grocery history through the lens of Trader Joe's. He "lives" the life of a grossly underpaid female trucker. I'll never see truck drivers the same way. Every topic is humanized and relatable.

  • Smart, funny, captivating

Loved this book and binge listened to it in a few days. The topic sounds a little boring but man oh man is it interesting. Great opening hook in the book to catch attention. Down to earth, smart, funny narration and writing made it easy and fun to learn. The author def knows his stuff and put in the time to learn this material.
I highly recommend. I look forward to his future books.

  • slow to appeal

I found the first chapter, about the history of the supermarket and about trader Joe's, very slow going. The rest of the book was an interesting behind the scenes look at supermarkets and how food gets onto the shelves.

  • Necessary info for anyone who eats

I LOVED this book. Listened to it on 1.5x while painting my house and I finished it in two days. A wealth of information, and I for one like a deep dive. It's akin to a more interesting Wiki page. I thought including the experience of a woman in trucking was crucial, and a look at the failure of the industry as a whole. Loved the part on the TJ owner, and the overall history of the grocery store. The chapter on shrimp is super enlightening for anyone who really cares about about the sources of their food. Overall, it made me want to stop eating, but truly will be more conscientious as a consumer. As an aside, I enjoyed the author's read of his work.

  • Entertaining and educational story of the food that you might no longer wish to eat

Lorr is an entertaining writer and a fine muckraking journalist who must have spent a ton of time investigating many important but hidden aspects of our grocery supply chain. You may never want to eat again after you read some parts of this book and it truly is an eye opener. From my own business experience, I found some parts to be more accurate than others but you can judge for yourself.

  • Very insightful

The amount of effort that went into this book is impossible to overstate. The author’s interview with “Trader Joe” is supplemented by those who work in the thick of the grocery industry like Whole Foods employees and truckers. The fact that the author was with these people for days or weeks at a time seemed to give him a special appreciation for what really happens.

One thing I learned: everything you get from a grocery store comes on a truck. The trucking part is probably the most incredible part because ordinary consumers like most of us never see what happens behind our local grocery store or what needs to happen to make sure we get our food. This book gave me a new respect for the cookie brownies I get from Vons. It’s very insightful.
