  • Overall poor .....

Just back from a few nights stay at this hotel and considering we’re now post Corona phase with new restrictions, it was a different experience and not a great one.Location of the hotel is perfect. Just a few minutes walk down a steep hill into the centre of Beek and beautiful nature walks right in front of the hotel. The inside of the hotel is floor marked with all types of stickers and arrows to help manage the social distancing. Our room was a big and spacious with a balcony but with extreme warm weather, what we missed was air-conditioning and a fridge in the room. Also missed was the usual body lotions and creams you would normally get in a bathroom. The swimming pool had to be reserved in advance and while it is small, it’s very old and out-dated. The pool railing was rusty and greasy to touch and the pool floor was held together with plastic patching. The Beauty and Massage is a big rip-off. They advertise a 45 minute pedicure for €32.50. For that and to have my hand nails filed and shaped, I was charged €42.50 and out within 35 minutes. For breakfast and dinner, we had to reserve a table in advance. I can understand it’s to manage how many people are in the room at any given time but the idea of vacation is to relax and not to be setting alarms and looking at your watch to see if we’re on time for reservations so I didn’t like this aspect at all. With breakfast, there is no buffet anymore. You have a choice of an English breakfast, a Continental breakfast (which some mornings they called a Holland breakfast) or a Healthy breakfast. What was amusing was to hear the poor waitress call out the contents of each breakfast to every table every morning. Surely some sort of a menu card on each table would have saved them all this hassle. Most mornings, all I wanted was bread and I told the waiter this but they still insisted on bringing out a full plate of cheese, meats and eggs which was a shame to see so much food going to waste. I noticed this waste on many other tables so I wasn’t the only one.For evening dinner, when we had the waiter Martijn, everything went superb. The guy was so friendly, helpful and always smiling. When we didn’t have Martijn, the service was slow having to throw arms all over the place with the hope of catching a waiter’s attention to ask where are the drinks we ordered 20 minutes ago. Another huge irritation was that we were on a 3 course evening meal package. While the food was excellent, there were some items on the menu that had an extra surcharge. One evening, I did not have the appetite for a starter. I asked for the rib-eye steak which had a €3.50 extra surcharge and I asked that they drop the surcharge considering I wasn’t having a starter. A typical starter was average €10.00 so they were already making a savings because I was not having a starter. The waiter called for the restaurant manager who told us this was not possible because the surcharge was on the meat and not the starter. The most ridiculous excuse I’ve ever heard. Overall not a great experience at this hotel.

  • Alright hotel

Stayed in the suite for one night. Hotel wasn’t particularly good but the jacuzzi made things up. + quick 24-hour check-in;+ free parking and enough parking space;+ clean;+ extra pillows;+ free Wi-Fi;+ refrigerator in the room;- outdated interior. We had some sort of jungle theme wallpaper with zebra bins. Guess it’s a matter of taste;- our room was in the basement which was a maze to get to;- no extra accessories in the bathroom besides one general pump which serves for showergel, handsoap and shampoo at the same time;- the one peppermint on our nightstand was a bit scanty.

  • Clean and Efficient, But Not What it Once Was

Over the past 10 years, we have stayed at the Val Monte at least eight times while visiting family in Nijmegen. We love the gardens around the hotel and the easy access to hiking and bike trails in the Groesbeek area. The rooms are clean and spacious and the common areas are tidy, if a bit dated. After the change in management, we were pleased to see some of the same staff members who worked there previously and welcomed the upgraded bikes for rent. We were disappointed to see that the tea service and the refrigerators are no longer available in the rooms. We also got the impression that the hotel really isn't interested in serving good food, or any food, besides the extensive breakfast buffet. Afternoon service on the terrace ends at 4pm! That's really disappointing, especially since guests returning from an afternoon hike or bike ride in the area may be in the mood for a sandwich or snack afterwards. Also, service on the terrace was incredibly slow. My children waited an hour for a broodje kroket one afternoon. The food served in the evening restaurant was not as good as in prior years--passable, but nothing special. The Parkhotel Val Monte is a good place to stay, but its really operating now like a bed and breakfast rather than a hotel with full food service.

  • A Quiet Retreat in the Woods-not for partiers! Above Avg./ not quite "Very Good"

What other reviewers disliked- I FOUND APPEALING! While on an auto tour of Europe in many towns and cities, for our one night stay, this nice, peaceful place in the the woods was a pleasant change. If you wish to see the city of Nijmegen, and have no car, STAY IN THE CITY! I found the staff friendly, the good food was better than at chain-hotels. The spacious room was a comfortable simplicity...not luxury, but not worn out and cheap. The view of the large front lawn with gardens and a pond and tall trees was inspiring.I am not one of the "old and retired guests" that others refer to in reviews about this hotel, but I do not need, desire or use a mini-bar, don't need to drink at a hotel bar until midnite (I'll go out to a real club!), and my tv doesn't need to be a 42 inch plasma.

  • 4-star hotel? No way!

This hotel pretends to be a 4-star hotel. In my opinion, only the lobby is, since that has been renovated recently. At arrival, they couldn't find our reservation but we got a room anyway since we printed the confirmation email. The room was very small, old and small beds with lumps in the matrasses, half-broken down tv, no mini bar and there was mold in the bathroom. Bathroom amenities weren't replenished every day so we had to run to the reception in the middle of the night to get some toilet paper.... The only upside of the room was the view on the lovely park at the back which could be seen from the (small)balcony. We heard that some of the other rooms were renovated as well but this one clearly wasn't!Breakfast was so so; staff had problems replenishing out of stocks and clearing tables in time. The hotel bar is dull and expensive. All in all absolutely no 4-star experience! Beautiful and quiet location but that's all in my opinion.
