TP-Link's Tapo Products: Compatibility Issues and Limited Integration Options

10 reviews between Jul 02, 2023 and Sep 04, 2023.

TP-Link's Tapo products have been a disappointment due to compatibility issues between the US and Europe versions. Despite being a TP-Link brand, Tapo devices do not integrate with Kasa or other companies' devices. The sudden communication failure with the Tapo hub and buttons has left customers frustrated. While the product is functional and affordable, it requires a separate hub for proper functionality. Overall, users appreciate the product's sound quality and ease of installation but desire better integration options.

  • Dissapointed

I have been using TP-Link products for many years and they have never disappointed me up until now. First of all, I don't understand why there are so may different lines - TP-Link, Kasa, Tapo... Initially, I though that Kasa was the line for home automation products for the US and Tapo was the same for Europe and other parts of the world. However, Tapo is now also being sold in the US. But, here is the catch - Tapo products sold in the US are NOT compatible with Tapo products sold in Europe. I bought the door sensor and button in the US but wanted to get the hub from Europe because of the different 220V plug. I posted a question on Amazon asking whether a hub from Europe would work with a door sensor and button from US and a TP Link/Tapo representative replied that it should. However, it does NOT. Now, the button and sensor that I bought are completely useless.

Specifically about the button. I find it to be not very well designed. I does not fit in the frame or attach to it in any way. Rather, it seems to rely on the enclosed tape to stay in place. What should I do when it's time to change the battery - rip off the tape? And then, buy another tape? I find this to be a poor design.

    • Only works with Tapo SmartAction

I bought 3 buttons and the Tapo hub to initiate some Alexa routines to run my Kasa smart bulbs. They worked perfectly for a week and then they abruptly stopped communicating with anything but the Tapo hub, which doesn't help me as the hub's direct SmartActions options don't include either of those companies, even though Kasa is also a TP-Link brand. Tapo customer service was unable to suggest anything but a factory reset, which didn't work. Bummed because they are brand new and I can't find any reason for the sudden refusal to communicate when they worked before.
