  • The view & restaurant is a must-do!

The historic elevator was built with materials from France and it is located in on a very cute little street. The cafe at the top has a magnificent view and it’s free entrance!

  • Great views

This may not be a thing on your bucket list, but if you happen to be in Izmir, this should be a place you want to stop by. It is basically a hilltop with a nice ancient elevator built by a Jewish philanthropist for residents of the area. The place offers breathtaking views of Izmir and its harbor with various restaurants and cafes. I recommend to be there in the evening beginning at dusk when the view is at its best:

    • Nice view, but not a must

The Tarihi Asansor is in fact an elevator and a view point in Izmir. It's pretty much out of the main tourist area, in the southwestern part of city. We were driving from Cesme so it was on our way, and we paid a visit. The elevator (there are 2 of them) is free and takes you from the sea level street up the steep cliff. Up, there's a small cafe and viewing platform.Views are really nice, you see the entire Izmir bay. Don't expect to see the city center from here.

    • Worth a short visit

Had some time to spare so took a visit to look around the Asansor as its listed as a "must do" attraction. If you are going by tram get off at Karatas tram stop then a short walk. I visited on a Sunday morning in winter so it was relatively quiet. There was no charge to ride the Asansor (lift/elevator) and the view from the top was good but restricted as you cannot walk all the way around and is a small area with many others trying to take that special photo to upload immediately onto Instagram. There is a small cafe there and a restaurant. Worth the trip for the view but 15 mins is all you need. I spent more time in one of the many cafes nearby.

    • Nice Short Visit

Beautiful view with safe and cheap cable car 1. For those who wonders how much is the cable car, it is only 15 TL and it is not expensive at all.2. The cable car is very stable and you don't feel like you are on one if you are really on the cable car despite the view you are looking. 3. The view is magnificent, you can overlook the whole Izmir and remember to bring your camera there, it definitely fills your camera with lots of pictures.

    • Good for a short visit for beautiful view of the city. Nothing much to do.

I had some time to kill after visiting Kemeralti so I decided to check out Asansor. You can easily come here by walking from Kemeralti. It's around 15 minutes of walk. You can either take an elevator to go up or take long stairs. I did not even know about the elevator and google maps showed me to take stairs up the mountain. So stairs it was for me. I also saw another tourist taking the stairs. It seems google maps failed him too. :DBefore I went here I thought it would be some awesome view point where I would be able to sit back and relax for an hour or so. I was hoping a large plaza kind of thing with local vendors selling stuff and all. What I found was a small viewpoint which was fenced with very small space to stand and enjoy the view. Further, since it was so little space there were always some people interested in coming forward and take a better look that you cannot stand at the main viewpoint for more than 5 minutes. There is a small restaurant here but I didn't try that. On the way back I used the elevator and realized that I only had to walk a few more steps for the right turn instead of taking the stairs.Overall, I realized that you can get better view of Izmir from Kadifekale than here. But considering the locals in Izmir think that Asansor is one of the top attractions in Izmir, as a tourist you should not miss it otherwise you may be left with a feeling that you missed something very important.

    • Nice view but such a pity!

Did you know that this historical monument used to be nearly by the sea? They have filled in the sea so much that now there are a few lines of apartments before you are by the sea not to mention a very busy coastal road. I wish we could get old Izmir back! Also, why are people writing their names here on the walls, on the plants? Who cares who was there etc. It is rather pointless and fines should apply to those who are caught doing this. Also why is the little çardak area now sealed off?I have questions but not sure who can answer them. If any action can be taken towards improvement, I am happy to give it a shot via TripAdvisor.

    • A Delightful Visit.

A sort of a hidden gem in the Karatas neighborhood. The Asansor (elevator/lift) is approached from the ground level after walking past a few quaint cafes/bars. The Asansor takes you up to the next street level where there are two additional restaurants where the service is reasonable but the views are spectacular.

    • Excellent spot to take a picture of the Izmir bay and the city

“Asansor” means elevator in Turkish. The site is called Asansor because it hosts the historical elevator which makes the travel between two neighborhoods, one of which is located meters higher than the other, easier for pedestrians. It is a great location to take the picture of the city center and the Izmir bay. A unique experience for the visitors.

    • Fantastic bay view

The historical elevator in Izmir's “Karataş” quarter is a place to watch some of the best views of Izmir’s bay. If you get there in an appropriate sunlight, you can shoot very good photos there. The historical data which is available there about the elevator shows that this landmark of Izmir has entertained visitors from the early 1900s on.

    • It saves a lot of climbing

Whether you need to go up or down- but especially up- this elevator is a huge help, mostly on hot summer days. It is also free for all. The café at the top offers, besides good coffee, wonderful views over the gulf of Izmir and the city.

The overlook on Izmir is fantastic. However, the place is crowded and you may need to wait some time to reach the best place (corner) in order to take photos. You must read the historical information sign on the lower floor of the Assansor.I advise you to go 2 times; day and night.

It was a beautiful place to see the sunset and have a beer, tea or coffee. Not much else to it. The area is also kind of nice to sit down and watch people as they walk by. There isn't too much space so there may be a crowd to watch the sunset.

    • Not so exciting

After we were told that there is a place in Izmir named Asansor and we must visit and be there at sunset to watch it from there. Afternoon around 7 p.m. we went there after we asked a lot, we arrived at a very crowded public Asansor that all people use to move from lower streets near the bay to upper streets as there are homes of people returning back from their work. At the top level there is a small terrace crowded, all aiming to watch the sunset. Not bad also with many coffee shops near it to take a rest drinking tea or coffee as well as small restaurants and snacks to eat (free no paying).

    • Best view of Izmir

Viewing deck and the street leading up to the historical elevator is just beautiful. You can take the tram to Karatas station and then walk for couple of minutes to get here. You could also rent a bike at one of Bisim bike stations and ride your bike there. You are allowed to take your bike on the elevator as it is big enough to fit 16 people.

    • It is one of the icons of İzmir

If you are a visitor in İzmir to watch the amazing view of city, visit here. İzmir is not a flat city. And in the past for about 100 years ago Jewish people used to live in this area and it was really hard to climb their houses on the hill( also famous shipowner and Jackie Kennedy’s second husband Aristotles Onnasis’ s house where he was born is forward of elevator). Jewish citizens wanted the help of Ottoman king to build this elevator and paid money for it. It still works and İt arrives a restaurant on the top. Foods are not great, but with the view you will feel them delecious.
