Mixed Reviews for Ring Doorbell: Easy to Install and Clear View versus Subscription Fees and Privacy Concerns

Customers have mixed feelings about the Ring Doorbell. Some love it, saying it was easy to install and provides clear view, making them feel more secure. Others complain about the motion detection being hit or miss, weak WiFi, and the fact that they now have to pay a subscription fee to have videos recorded. Many are also concerned about the privacy issues with Amazon, the owner of Ring, sharing their video footage without consent. Some had issues with connectivity, battery life, and limited features for unpaid accounts.

  • Either picks up nothing or picks up EVERYTHING

I have had the wired ring before and it was amazing. Notifications and recordings were on point. This one, no way! Either it is showing all the traffic on our busy street and notifying us of every car, or it doesn't show even me standing in front of the damn thing. Do not get this one, it is horrible.

  • I love it

I love my Ring and will be buying at least 1 more. I had no issues with wifi when setting this up, I think I read somewhere that some people did have issues, but I didn't. I love being able to see who is at my door, night or day, no more surprises.
The battery on my Ring lasts about 4 months and then it's time to recharge.
I like that I am able to lock the Ring Doorbell with the screw they provide. Is it theft-proof? Yes, in a manner of speaking. They know what a Ring Doorbell camera does. They know that they are being captured on video. It's a great deterrent to whomever thinks it's a good idea to try and take it or damage it. Sure they can damage it, however, I'll have great video and stills to give to the cops.
Whenever I go out of town to visit relatives, Ring notifies me of visitors to my house via the app. I get to view them, and listen to them and find out who they are and what they are up to. They have no idea if I'm home or not at home. I had one person leave my property rather quickly when they heard the Ring Doorbell chiming.

  • Not worth it

You're better off spending your money on a decent dvr system.
Motion detection is very hit or miss. You'll catch every car driving by (even when you set up motion detection zones) and might miss someone standing in front of it knocking on the door. And when it DOES pick people up it cuts off mid-visit. So you'll see them walking on your porch and then it just stops recording so you won't know what happend. I adjusted settings like crazy over weeks. So it's not a matter of me just using incorrect settings. I tried them all.

Wifi is weak even at 25-30ft away from router.

But the worst part is rhe ring community app. Someone steal your package? Go to post it and see if neighbors can help identify the person - or at least warn them. Great idea in theory. But ring is VERY picky about what it lets go live. Someone standing on a porch ringing a door bell? Ring will let that up as "suspicious activity". Next door neighbor stealing your mail? Nope. Why? Homeless man setting up shop on your porch? Nope. Why? Vandalism? Depends on who did it. Someone you don't know? Probably fine. Clearly someone who came from a neighboring house? Nope. Now, just because they came from a neighboring house doesn't mean they live there. And the people who do won't rat out their friends. And the police can't cite someone if they don't know who they are. So calling rhe police is useless. Which is why this app SHOULD be great. But its 90% "who's cat was in my yard at 3AM?!??"

The device itself is expensive and then you pay a subscription just to be able to see the videos??

So, all that combined and I'd say ring is pretty useless. Hard pass.

All that stuff if free if you buy a decent dvr. And you'll have multiple angles to boot.

  • I never want to go without this camera ...

We have a lot of shenanigans that happen in the neighborhood and this camera notifies me wherever I am that someone is in my yard or at my door. It has a great camera with very wide coverage. I'm able to see my yard and both neighbors' yards on either side of my house. I had a doorbell previously but the wires were cut too short to hook this cam bell up, so I connected the charger and its wire to the back of the ring cam and fed it into my house plugged it up and it is just like I connected to the doorbell wires, just FYI.
