I am really interested in positive discipline, and I found this book helpful and intriguing. It has lots of ideas for teachers and parents.
This is so great for all parents and teachers alike! You will need to be a strong person to follow this method and I’m not sure I’m up to it, honestly. But I’m going to give it a try! Best of luck to all who are brave enough to be vulnerable and loving!!!
I tried really hard to make this work, for over a year. I carefully read and follow the advice, the result was kids that kept pushing my buttons, doing whatever they wanted, and were progressively respecting me less and less.
Maybe this works with some kids, but the basic concept is completely flawed. Thinking this through, we are trying to hold our kids at a higher standard that we adults hold ourselves to. In our jobs, there are consequences if we don't behave and follow the rules, and there are rewards for putting our best effort and succeeding, and we expect and demand those rewards.
I strongly advise struggling parents to look elsewhere, simple and consistent methods where consequences (yes, euphemism for punishment) are the result of bad behavior, as we adults face if we for example break the law, can be very effective and prepare kids for the real world. Minor consequences can go a long way, I bought a small notebook to put a tally mark for the kid that misbehaved, and that tally mark was then removed (strikethrough) by taking 30 minutes of videogames from the offending kid. Yes, just 30 minutes of video games privilege for an instance of substantial bad behavior. The looming prospect of this quite insignificant consequence solved 75% of the problems I struggled so much before when using the advice presented on this book...
Just the book I need
Nice book, learned a lot with this!
This is my 5th time to purchase this book. It is amazing. It’s so good that I keep giving it to people or loaning it out. So great that you want to share it with everybody you care about.
Must read for parents and teachers
It made a huge change in my life wiry my son and students
I love it
Help book for parents with troubled or difficult children.
I recommend this to everyone I know. The concepts are life changing. It can be hard to get used to the idea of no punishment, especially if you were raised in an authoritarian style, as I was, but the PD approach really works. Jane Nelsen, like Ross Greene, helps parents and strong willed kids find a path forward that is compassionate and respectful. It allows parents to set expectations while still empowering kids. But above all, it is amazingly effective. I see my friends yell at their kids and punish them and then throw their hands up in the air at how they can be so defiant—especially when they had no problems with their first child. I try to recommend this book, but some people just can’t give up the concept of “good old fashioned discipline.” And for some kids maybe punishments/consequences won’t be too harmful, but if you have a strong willed child with a high need for autonomy, PD is the way to go if you want a respectful, cooperative, empowered kid.
I should start by saying there is some good advice in the book. The problem is that there is no evidence presented for anything in the book. As another reviewer pointed out, there are very few references and the author insists on utilizing 100 year old psychological models that have been widely debunked. She unironically talks about how Adler claimed he could cure any mental illness in 14 days.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.
Bought this as required reading for a class. After page 97, it jumps back to page 35. I paged through to the next page 97 after the 35 and it repeats again. The cover states it was completely revised and updated….BY WHO? Mr Magoo? Hopefully there’s no information missing that will harm assignments for this book.
A good gift for my sister
I imagine the ppl that gave this book low reviews may have disliked the way it starts: recognizing that children with behavioral problems usually means the parents have some things they need to work on first!
The theme of this book is "be kind and firm" (at the same time) and the concept that perhaps your most important skill as a parent is to " learn how to be encouraging."
We have four teenagers and I want to testify gnat THESE METHODS WORK! But it is not easy at first. Be patient with yourself. Takes some fine tuning! I didn't use all of the things she goes over (we rarely do "family meetings" and many other little suggestions. But this book is incredible and I have seen big changes in my kids, and it started with me
Great book - highly recommended by my friends who are parents. An incredible guide to helping connect with your kids, and raise them in a healthy way.
Ridiculous. I just started reading this and pages 18-35 are ripped out!!
If you want to understand your child or children overall in these changing times, I think Positive Discipline does it well in this book.
I wish I have read this long before, and so I would have done less damage to my kid like those negative remarks and futile punishment.
As much as I balked at elements of this book (maybe the writer is a much nicer person than myself? Maybe she lives on a different mountain or valley than myself and nothing is reachable?) it eventually relieved me of my fears and provided exercises to establish awareness of my biases (lifestyle priorities) and gave illustrations of appropriate natural consequences that, because of a sense of ‘what will the neighbors think’ I was unsure I was doing ‘the’ right thing. I am capable, I am learning, and “mistakes are great opportunities to learn.” Glad my housemate recommended this book. Several other varieties tuned for audiences that have a different us/them break down (sobriety, child care, teens). Same great message through and through.
Knew the author from conferences. One of the very best books for adults helping children become capable people. As a teacher, I used this book as a basis for interactions with students throughout my career, and have gifted it to a great number of new or struggling parents.
This book is wonderful. So many common sense explanations for children’s challenging behaviors. Charts for viewing and online downloads! For anyone who wants positive parenting tools and wants to raise a strong, independent, confident human 🤘
I’ve read a ton of parenting books but this one really made a lot of sense to me. I think the advice is good and it provides a plan. However, even after reading it, it’s hard to change your habits. It’s a good idea to keep referencing it.
I must say I had a really hard time reading this book - the writing is so disorganized, and yes, there are parenting tips, but they are sprinkled around and you really have to hunt for them! I had to circle them out with a pen because they are so hard to find. There is just too much fluff in there that I don't care to read - I am looking for practical advices / tips that are clustered together. Honestly, the author's other book, "Positive Discipline for the first three years" is so much better than this one.
Valuable insight and tools. I would have loved to see more insight into younger children but I guess research is more challenging there’s.
So effective. Practical. Has helped enormously. Fundamentally has improved our family dynamic. We are so grateful!
Best price
Great quality and expedient delivery time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Excellent tips to understand more the psychology of our child’s
This book is fantastic! Highly recommend. It can be a little repetitive about its purpose but the wealth of information it gives is worth it.
I’ve read it and learned very much. There is a long way to company my kids under the Positive Discipline wisdom.
Great book! Concise and to the point, with steps. It's not extreme either way, and it's not all common sense. It brings a lot of points to light. I listen to the audiobook, and there's two things about that...it didn't take long to get used to her voice. It's just not a typical audiobook voice. Also, I would definitely read the book so you can take notes, and focus on the ideas. I have read how to talk so kids can listen, positive discipline, the whole brain child, no drama discipline, love and logic, and more. I wish I would have read this first, because I think it's my favorite. It's finally a book my husband and I see eye-to-eye

The Autel Home Smart Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger is a Level 2 charger that connects to an app, has a 50Amp charging capacity, and is Energy Star and CSA certified. It has smart features and charges effectively, making it a great option for those with electric vehicles. Reviews note some issues with Bluetooth connection and packaging damage, but overall recommend it for being simple to use, user-friendly, and a good price compared to other products.
