  • I really enjoyed the tutorials in this book. I wish the OG Studio Anywhere book would come back in stock! This one is great for light theory though!

  • Having read the first book I ordered this one straight away and I am not disappointed. If you are a purist and like expensive gear then this book and the first one will make you think again. I am an oldie who took up photography again after a corporate life. I can afford the gear BUT this book has taught me that learning and experimenting with the basics is far more valuable a tool. Well done Nick for doing this when up against so much 'buy the best gear' approach. I have learned so much more about using my speedlights in a very short time from your books than the last few years.

  • Great instructional guide to using hard light. Unless you've already mastered speedlights and strobes I'd recommend this book! Great read.

  • This is a short book that I read in a few hours. If I hadn’t read his other book, 'Studio Anywhere', I might have liked this book more. But 'Studio Anywhere' set a very high benchmark that this one doesn’t meet.

Given the title, I assumed the book would be a love letter to hard light. But this isn’t the case because in most of the examples he uses modifiers to either shape the light or soften it (for example by bouncing the flash). A better title would be ‘Experiments with light', but to be honest there isn’t the same variety of situations as in his earlier book to make it as interesting. I also detected some hubris in this book that I don’t remember from 'Studio Anywhere'. For example, there are several references to his ‘high end clients’. He deserves his success but to English ears this can come across as a little arrogant.

On the plus side, like 'Studio Anywhere', it has encouraged me to break out my Speedlites and to try some new things. I also like the way he presents lighting problems: “This photo shows the environment where I had to make a moody portrait of my model. Guess how I did it.” And the book has given me some specific ideas, like: (a) put your model on a table in an office environment (you then shoot from below and it makes the pose more heroic); (b) use soft light and hard light from the same direction to create a kind of crisp image; (c) use anaglyph 3D colours (cyan and red) as flash gels and place the flashes about 18” apart to create a dramatic image.

In conclusion, this book is certainly worth a read, but it's like that difficult second album. So if you've not read his first book, try that instead.

  • Sehr gutes Buch !
