Review of the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent

30 reviews between Jan 03, 2023 and Jun 29, 2023.

The Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent offers a practical and enjoyable camping experience, but has some drawbacks. It leaked during a light downpour and had popped stitching. The tent is not lightweight but is spacious and has a nice layout of screened windows. Some customers received damaged tents and poor customer service. Overall, the tent is decent for the price but there are better options available.

  • 2.0 out of 5 stars Will never buy a Coleman tenant again!

This was my first outing with this tent and it leaked during a light down pour. To make matters worse, I found popped stitching in the front vestibule when packing it up. This loyal Coleman fan is thoroughly disappointed!

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Huge!

I haven't used the tent yet, so can't rate weatherproof quality. It is definitely not what I would consider lightweight! I didn't purchase it to be light, more for size and functionality.

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Embrace the Outdoors with the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent

The Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent offers a practical and enjoyable camping experience, allowing you to connect with nature while still enjoying some comforts. However, it does have a few drawbacks that should be considered. Here's my review of the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent, highlighting its features and addressing the issue with the tent poles.

First and foremost, the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent provides ample space and a screened porch area, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors while keeping bugs at bay. The tent's roomy interior provides comfortable accommodation for a small group or family, while the screened porch offers a pleasant space to relax and enjoy the scenery without the annoyance of insects.

However, one notable drawback of this tent is the quality of the tent poles. The fiberglass poles, while lightweight and easy to handle, may be prone to splintering and causing discomfort. It's important to handle them with care to avoid potential splinters. Consider using protective gloves or wrapping the pole ends with tape to minimize the risk of splinters.

On the positive side, the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent features a durable and weather-resistant construction. The tent's WeatherTec system helps keep you dry during rainy conditions, and the included rainfly provides additional protection. The tent's mesh windows and roof vents promote proper ventilation, ensuring a comfortable interior even during warmer weather.

Setting up the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent is relatively straightforward, thanks to its color-coded pole sleeves and easy-to-follow instructions. The tent comes with stakes and guy lines for added stability, allowing it to withstand moderate wind conditions. The tent's packability and convenient carry bag make transportation and storage hassle-free.

In conclusion, the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent offers a practical camping solution with its spacious interior and screened porch area. While the fiberglass tent poles may present some challenges, their lightweight nature and potential splintering can be managed with caution. Embrace the outdoors and enjoy the durability and weather resistance of this tent, while taking necessary precautions with the poles.

    Pros:
    1. Spacious interior and screened porch area for comfortable camping.
    2. Durable construction with weather-resistant features.
    3. Proper ventilation through mesh windows and roof vents.
    4. Color-coded pole sleeves and straightforward setup.
    5. Packability and convenient carry bag for easy transportation.

    Cons:
    - Fiberglass tent poles may splinter if not handled with caution.

Embrace the camping experience with the Coleman Evanston Screened Camping Tent. Enjoy the spaciousness and screened porch area while taking necessary precautions with the tent poles. Explore the great outdoors and create lasting memories with this practical camping tent, designed to enhance your camping adventures.

  • 1.0 out of 5 stars Missing Poles - Crappy Customer Service

Tent arrived quickly. However, the new tent package was missing the pole for the vestibule. An extra ridge pole (for the rain fly) had been included instead.

Coleman customer service did not help. The representative responded by saying, "The pole is an accessory for your tent and does not have a warranty. We do have the fiberglass tent pole replacement kit, 11 meters, in stock right now."

He also replied that I could work with Amazon to return the tent with the refund being processed by check in 4-6 weeks. My follow-up reply remains unanswered.

Purchased the tent for a family trip almost a month in advance. I thought that I would have a better expierience ordering straight from Coleman (Coleman Store on Amazon). Company was not helpful. Plan on buying extra poles or go through another vendor. Not worth the hassle.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Stayed dry in storm

Had our first family camping adventure and we got caught in a fairly intense storm for several hours. Tent held up well! We stayed dry and the kids even slept through it! Plenty roomy for our family of 6.

The item I received was damaged. Someone attempted to sew this peice back on I could tell, fell off right when I tried to connect it. Not happy because this is the second Evanston I've bought here, other one came damaged too. Poor quality control. Happened on our vacation no less.

    • 4.0 out of 5 stars Solid entry level tent

Good size, though the doors are a bit short. Set up took about 20 mins the first time, but getting the rain fly on is a bit tedious. The stakes that come with the tent are garbage, but that is fairly normal. Kept us surprisingly warm while it was in the 50s outside. Screen room is a nice feature, but the way it slopes will allow water to come through the front 2 feet or so. Definately put a tarp below when you set up, the flooring seems a bit thin.

    • 1.0 out of 5 stars Tears after 2nd use

While I was setting up the tent I noticed some tears in the sleeve where you slide the poles. After disassembling the tent I noticed the tears were larger. I don’t think I can set up the tent for a 3rd time. Basically it was a 2x use tent. Waste of money…

Found this on sale for $90 i would say for that price it is a decent tent. The fabric isn't great and probably wont hold up long but serves it purpose. There are much much better tents if you can only find this at full price.

    • 5.0 out of 5 stars Great tent.

This tent worked great for our trip. Looking forward to using it again soon.

Zippers are smooth and easy to oprate. It kept the main tent completely dry inside when it rained most of one the night on our trip. Super easy to set up as most of these dome type tents are.

I recommend getting a footprint for under the tent as an extra layer of protection.

    • 5.0 out of 5 stars Missing component-Coleman replaced it

I got to my campsite and the metal end cap was missing on one of the two main support poles. It made the tent virtually unusable.

On my return I contacted Coleman for a warranty replacement and they responded the next day. A claim was processed and I received a replacement within a week. I couldn't ask for better customer service.

The tent itself has room enough for a queen and single inflatable mattress. I'm 5'8" and can stand up comfortably.

A pro-tip from another review caused me to stake one side of the screen room zipper. It makes it very stable and smooth to operate.

Assembly is probably a 2 person job but it's pretty intuitive. Packing up is definitely a 2 person job but we got everything back in the bag.

Other than the pole issue (which I'll check on any future putchase) we love the tent, value and customer service.

    • 4.0 out of 5 stars Great tents but not for 6

We bought 2 of these as we are a family of 6. They are great tents. Pros- kept us dry when it rained, very airy, loved having the entry to put shoes on and off, went up and down easily. Cons- the rain fly doesn’t come over the screened porch area to keep dry (but I believe the newer version does), not much height…you are not going to stand up straight unless you are a child, fit my full size cot nicely for the adult tent, but in no way would this sleep 6…even with just sleeping bags. Overall we had a great camping trip with these tents!

Not too bad to assemble, good space, I would like to have more pockets , it only has two. Also it only has 1 cord to hang a lamp. Fabric quality is good but it rained when we camped and all the porch floor got super wet.

    • 4.0 out of 5 stars Good family tent reasonably priced

Very roomy. We loved the front porch area. Fit 2 queen size air mattresses in the living space. Good for family of 4 with 2 dogs. Decent to set up with 2 people. Set up with 1 person not so easy but doable. Fidgety to get rain fly on but not difficult with 2 adults. Slow to put away. Recommend use a good tarp for a footprint. Had ours for 7+ years. Never had a leak and we did deal with several strong storms in ours. If you stake it down well it handles pretty serious winds. Very airy, never had any condensation. Zippers were acceptable, but lube them and baby them in use, not the strongest. Be careful sliding poles through sleeves, very easy to rip. We damaged ours the second time we put it up, but by being careful it never got any worse or affected the tents function.
We finally just retired ours, one bad zipper on door and a fiberglass tent pole split lengthwise on our last trip.

    • 4.0 out of 5 stars Had a split seam first camp trip

Was a small split where a rope attaches in the sewn seam but it speaks for the materials and product quality. The tent wasn’t expensive but I expected more from a company like Coleman. Guess everything is pacific rim build quality these days.
Overall the tent is big and spacious inside. Queen sized air mattress with room to spare.

    • 1.0 out of 5 stars Even if this was free I’d be unhappy

Brand new and first use the 2 dome pole fiberglass shattered in a section of the pole, the porch pole also broke as well. One of the pole tunnels ripped as well. This tent is not worth buying or the time it takes to set up and tear down being such subpar quality.

I’ve used a lot of Coleman products over the years and the quality has never been this poor. I’m very disappointed in this purchase. I’m look for something else instead of this tent.

    • 5.0 out of 5 stars Great 3-season Camping Tent

Took this 6 person tent to a two-day camping last weekend. The tent was very comfortable in size fitting a queen size mattress easily and leaving space for other items. It can definitely hold a king size mattress as well. There is a hook at the ceiling to hang a lantern or lightweight fan. There are also two ~8in pockets (one on each window) to leave phone, flashlights, or batteries. The green color makes photogenic when surrounded by woods. After using this tent, I have to say that the screened porch is a must when camping in the woods. Leaving the boots and other wet items outside in the porch made it great.

The temperature fluctuated from 32F at night to 55F during daytime. The tent was very comfortable temperature wise until the outdoor temperature went below 45F. After that, we had to turn on a heater as it's design is more fore summer/spring/rain than for winter. Honestly, can't wait to use it for summer - the ventilation it promises that it will be very comfortable for summer nights.

    • 3.0 out of 5 stars Porch is useless

Porch gets wet with condensation and rain. Can’t keep gear on porch at night. The next morning everything on the porch is drenched. Better off with dome tent without the covered porch would take less time to setup also. Minus the porch issue the tent itself is fine.

I bought one of these 5 years ago and have used it from every camping or music festival since. I loved it so much that when it broke down I just rebought it again. It's advertised for 6 people, assuming you're sardines. Really you can have 1 person with a while bedroom, 2 people comfortably, or 3 if you get smart with the layout. The entry way sun room area is also great to leave shoes out to dry, or if you want to leave a cooler for drinks to easily access. Love this tent!

    • 5.0 out of 5 stars Big tent, good value

I bought this on sale for $109 and figured at that price you can't go wrong.

I've used it only one night in a state park.

      Pros:
      Huge
      Cheap
      Good rainfly
Nice porch area to sit or to stow a few a few things
      Looks nice
Decent quality zippers at this price

      Cons:
      Heavy
      Large bag
Setup takes time, a bit tricky for one person, easier with two

      Other thoughts:
We're talking about a value proposition here. I wanted the screened in porch. If you're into that, there are tons of other tents you can buy. The porch area is a great place to leave your shoes, set up a chair to sit, etc. Just keep in mind that if it rains, that area will get wet and plan accordingly.
I have other tents for when I camp alone or go backpacking. This one is for car camping with my wife. We will see if she ever chooses to tag along, but I've tested the tent and it works great.

    • 3.0 out of 5 stars Great as long as it doesn’t rain 😵‍💫

This tent really goes up fast and stores really well in the provided tent bag. I really bought this for the screened vestibule. Unfortunately the screen room has nearly zero protection from rain. For blue skies and perfect weather it is great, but not great for keeping gear dry in the screened in area. The main tent itself had zero leaks, nice and dry.

    • 4.0 out of 5 stars Great tent

2nd UPDATE: Coleman was STELLAR in their response to my split tent pole. Moving the stars BACK TO 4, for the OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE!
UPDATE: When taking the tent down, I discovered a split tent pole. I will reduce my rating (from 4 to 2 stars) until I hear back from product support. These things happen, and I await to see how Coleman handles them when they do happen.
Good Coleman tent. It took :20 mins for me to do the first setup, and I was taking my time. It took an additional :10 mins or so to put the rainfly on and adjust it.
I set it up alone, and probably could have halved the time, with a partner to help. I have had it in place for 4 days now, in the back yard. I have it closed up, to see what kind of bugs may crawl in, if the rain is repelled and how it handles the wind. I will be purchasing better stakes, this should greatly increase the tents durability in winds.

      Pros:
      Easy to erect
      spacious
      nice looking
repels water on the interior faultlessly

      Cons:
Does not handle wind well, if the rainfly is on (this could be the poor stake design which Coleman uses)
As mentioned, the stakes hold well, until there is any wind.

Overall, I think this will work for my intended purpose, so I am recommending the purchase for the casual camper.
