  • Dont buy this book , there are books out there for less price . And there is nothing special to know about film direction in this book , its exaggerated in my view . I have read many books on film making and most them bough here in Amazon , I honestly feel that I am ripped off with price tag.

  • Superb Survey how Filmmakers use Cinematic Tools to tell their Stories!

For anyone who finds conceiving and realizing their cinematic visions obscured by the camera's technological jungle, Stephen Katz's excellent guide will bring clarity to beginner and advanced storytellers alike. The fact that it is it's 25th anniversary edition speaks to its powerful explanations, visual examples, and freedom from off-putting techno-babble. Highly Recommended.

  • An immensely helpful introduction to the craft of visualizing a movie

Author Steve D. Katz introduces readers to the visual building blocks -- shot by shot -- of cinematic language. I've spent many years as a screenwriter and as I prepare to direct for the first time, this book has given me a fresh way to see and understand the way films are designed and shot.

  • film direction

Though it lacks color illustrations, the book is otherwise an exquisite breakdown of the direction process. I've never directed a film so I don't know for sure, but considering the depth of the book I'll take the author's word that this is how a pre-planned narrative film is ideally conceptualized, shot and put together. Highest recommendation for anyone seriously interested in how films are directed and shot and why things are done the way they are.

  • A useful update to the classic book

This has been a go to book for filmmakers for many years. Today's digital systems offer immediate previews and reviews which make the task of imagining how everything is going to turn out a little easier. Young filmmakers today probably cannot imagine a time where you had to wait for film to be processed and printed to see what things really look like, and where post shoot adjustments were difficult and costly. This book was first written in those times.

Developing the discipline to see how things will play out in your mind before putting the crew and equipment to work is still a valuable skill, and essential is you are going to rise to the top of the craft.
