As I've mentioned in previous reviews of self-help books that I've read, I'm always a bit weary when I pick one of these books up because they can be a real "hit or miss" for me in terms of reading experience. I would consider myself "picky" about books in general (mostly because I have a problem abandoning a book once I start it), but even more so when it comes to non-fiction reads, which for me in particular, requires extra effort and concentration.
With this mindset, I went into James Clear's popular self-help book Atomic Habits not really expecting to get too much out of it – which is why I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up enjoying this one. Of course, as is the case with many self-help books, the concepts that Clear talks about in his book aren't brand new (I'm sure there are dozens of books out there covering the same topic) and in all honesty, there was nothing particularly mind-blowing about the content itself. Having said that, what made this book stand out for me was its simple, easy-to-understand format – basically, Clear took what can be a complicated topic and broke it down in a way that was clear, insightful, and practical. As I was reading, I didn't feel like I had to jump through hoops in order to grasp the concepts or that I had to think too deeply on how to meaningfully apply the ideas to my daily life. In fact, I already started applying some of it and, seeing the results, am motivated to continue. I also really liked the structure of the book, with nice short chapters as well as relevant charts and tools interspersed at the right moments. I also found the summary at the end of each chapter – which listed out main "takeaways" from the chapter in simple bullet points – extremely useful in terms of helping to remember the important points in each section.
In a way, I guess this is one of those instances of reading "the right book at the right time". Given how chaotic the end of the year usually is for me (both at home and at work), finding the time to read at all can be challenging, so it definitely helps to read a book that I can easily get through and parse, for one, and two, can be readily applied to situations I'm working through currently.
While quite a few aspects of this book definitely resonated with me, especially in this moment of my life, I'm sure it will be different for others, so I would say keep that in mind when deciding whether to pick this one up or not. I found this book to be a worthwhile read, of course, but even if it doesn't particularly resonate with others, I feel like there are some insights that can be helpful.
I have read a ton of books on habits and how to be more productive. This is hands-down, the best book I’ve come across so far. I bought copies to give to my kids…methods are easy to understand and can be utilized for any purpose from personal life to career. My favorite is the “two minute rule” Highly recommend.
"Atomic Habits" by James Clear is a game-changer! This book offers practical techniques and a clear framework for building good habits and breaking bad ones. Clear's emphasis on small, consistent improvements and the power of environment make it incredibly effective. With its engaging writing style and motivational storytelling, "Atomic Habits" is a must-read for anyone looking to transform their habits and achieve long-term success.
Easy to read using interesting examples. I really enjoyed reading all chapters. Even though you know most of the content, you fell that you learn something new.
I'm a self-help book author, and junkie because my primary identity is "change-agent": I'm a social worker and therapist. People arrive at the office with self-doubt, a sense of failure, because their list of faults is too big. Their efforts to change are heroic failures most of the time. James has a message of encouragement: start small and be consistent. He offers dozens of "hacks" to make it possible, even easy and fun. Never give up, start small, be a daily 1 minute exerciser/meditator/artist and it will grow. https://www.amazon.com/author/cynthiawall
Book Atomic Habits very significant impersonal development. Needed my own copy to underline, make margin notes
Really good book, very different from other "self help books"
This book has changed my habits completely! Definitely recommend!
There are SO MANY great ideas in this book! I listened to it on audible, but had to buy a paper copy to highlight and refer to. It is useful in SO MANY applications!!! Used it for a book club (all those that read it loved it), and shared ideas from it with a young church group (7 - 10 year old girls), and also to a group of kids who are going to age out of the foster care system. This is a book I will NOT declutter.
Follows a similar formula to most books: about 3p pages of useful info, and a bunch of boring, drawn-out anecdotes and filler. This book is great is you want a mediocre book that states the obvious over and over, and reads like it was written by a high schooler. Dont waste your money.
I recently read Atomic Habits, and while I had high hopes for the book, it fell a bit short of my expectations. While it does provide some useful tips and strategies for developing and changing habits, I found that it didn't offer as many groundbreaking insights as I had anticipated. The concepts presented were often familiar, and I was hoping for more depth and originality in the content. However, I must acknowledge that the book is well-organized and offers practical advice for those new to habit formation, making it a decent starting point for someone looking to improve their habits.
The first best book is The Road Less Traveled.
So helpful when it comes to learning how to break bad habits. Easy read and so informative.
If you're trying to change your life, it starts from changing who you are. Honestly if I can give it 10 out of 5 stars, I would. Book came in perfect condition (rare for Amazon books tbh). I decided to get this book because so many leaders / influential people recommended it, and boy they were right! The moment I read this, I immediately took action - that's how powerful it is! If you don't want to live a mediocre life, but a fulfilling one, please invest in this book, DO IT!! Starts with YOU!
Put together small changes to end up with big changes. Focus on development of systems that lead you to change.
Finally I got it!! ❤️
It's a process I can adjust as I need too, as simple as that.
Atomic Habits by James Clear delivers an important and powerful message. I did find the book insightful as to his method of self betterment and I can see that being very effective in dealing with overwhelming self improvement. The book does lay out almost like a game plan as to how to conquer problematic attributes of your character through powerful habits. This is found streamlined and helpful.
However, I believe that the message was quite repetitive while not adding anything to the message each time it was repeated. It just felt drawn out by the time I got two thirds through the book.
If you need help forming habits to better your life, this is a good start to do so. Sadly, the book was kind of long winded with no satisfying conclusion.
I loved the book. It’s easy to read yet has a lot of valuable information that will be used in everyday life.
This book is excellent!
literally a great book j get it fr
I'm an Executive Coach and thought I knew quite a bit about human behavior. However, Mr. Clear does a masterful job in breaking down how our systems drive our success not just setting goals. Also, his value added insights into the Four Laws of Behavior Change are just brilliant. I believe this is a must read for anyone on their journey through life who want to make a difference and to create positive change, for themselves and others.
bought it for my son. Hope it helps
I loved everything it had to say about the development of the bad habits to the solutions to break the bad habits!!
Although I listened with interest as my cousin told me about Atomic Habits, I didn’t read it until about weeks after our conversation. While browsing through the aisles of a local Books-A- Million one afternoon, I spied the book, pulled it from the shelf, and began rifling through the pages. It didn’t take long to realize that I needed a copy of my own. The terminology (implementation intention, habit stacking, and accountability partner, etc.) were right up my alley. I spotted Edward Thorndike’s name, some information about genetic components, and Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow and walked to the counter to buy the book.
On the way home, I perused the contents and was pleased to see a concept I’d heard about at church a few weeks earlier—the aggregation of marginal gains. Buy the book and read more about it in the first chapter. For now, I’ll just say that’s how Dave Brailsford transformed the British Cycling team into a team of world champions. Small improvements produced remarkable results, and I believe James Clear’s advice can work for me/you/us, too.
The case for building atomic habits and breaking bad ones was well-presented in this research-based volume. And it’s for everyone who wants to improve in any area of life, not just athletes going for the gold. We just need to make the habit-making process obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying.
I’m not a huge reader, but am a huge proponent of this book! It’s wonderful. I’ve bought and added into gifts for friends because I love it. Will likely buy more copies!
The book was recommended to me by my daughter. I listened to it on Audible and breezed through it much faster than usual. That's because it was intently interesting....it grabbed me as being ideas I could immediately adopt. I'm already on my second time through.
Great book, great principles, and does a fabulous job of teaching those principles
There's plenty of detailed reviews. I don't like reading and you may not either. Get this book and change your life, if only a little bit. Even the audiobook, or a youtube summary. I promise, it can make your life at least 1% better, and what more can you ask for from a book, particularly a non-fiction one?
You can really find an option or good suggestion to improve your life with small constant changes .. Just do it
Good tips on how to make a changes but not really helpful when it comes to actually helping with depression or anxiety

Parents are loving the modern short stories of 'Five Minute Bedtime Stories' that teach valuable lessons and keep children engaged without distracting pictures. The lack of illustrations makes it more suitable for older kids, and the suggested questions after each story encourage discussion and critical thinking. The stories cover virtues such as honesty, kindness, and self-control, and are written in simple language with occasional larger vocabulary words. While some parents find the stories repetitive and better suited for younger children, others appreciate the witty and purposeful writing that engages their kids and helps them wind down for bedtime.
