This has a lot of info if you are new to farming. Easy to read and I like how it has pictures to show what they are talking about
Really? Zapping a deer with an electric fence is bad enough but deliberately baiting it with peanut butter is inhumane! There are so many ways to deter critters than harming themâŚon purpose!
I listened to this on Audible because it was included in my Membership and I aspire to farm. Have an indoor hydroponic garden in the condo, which I love. This book is amazing. I love the intensive techniques to get more yield. The focus on health, regeneration, and economics. I felt like I was sitting and listening to a wise farmer give me all the tricks of the trade. There is also a PDF with the audiobook. Highly recommend.
Not sure what all the rave reviews are about. I found this book shallow and generalized. If you are looking for topics about mini farming, this has some ideas. if you are looking for specifics then it has very little other than a few tables of modest value (such as how many pounds of a vegetable you can produce in 100 sq feet - which of course is also general because that quantity could vary greatly based on your methods, environment etc.)
I grew up on a small farm and I wish this book had been in our library growing up as it would have served as 1) an excellent guide to have a successful garden and chicken flock 2) a reality check on the amount of preparation needed to be self sustaining to a degree. I would recommend this even if you only want to start with a small garden bed. The information is scalable.
I really like this book. But so much of the advice assumes you are in zone 4-6, it feels like -- and that on the east coast.
As a gardener relocated to Virginia (piedmont 7b) from the East Bay (CA, semi-arid zone 10a), a lot of the advice is a little tone deaf to the idea that all places are not western Massachusetts. In fact, many parts of the US are radically different, and a novice could be misled.
Be sure to find region/zone specific information. Get to know your county's USDA Extension Service. They are absolutely required supplements to this otherwise outstanding book.
