Customers Disappointed with Western Digital SSDs

Do not buy these drives. Known firmware issue.

These are cheap (1TB model) and hold up well in my media server that runs Open Media Vault to handle all my docker containers and Plex. The machine is on 24/7 in my garage where at the worst of the new England summer it gets about 80 max with 60-70% humidity. Fast enough that I don't have any performance issues when it extracts usenet files or does back ups or any kind of disk read/write. Sure there's faster but for a media server that just downloads and processes usenet files and other related activities it's super cheap, reliable and quick.

This is a great item for extra storage and at a great price too. The install only took 2 minutes, so easy to use.

I run a computer repair facility and buy ALOT of these drives. Last year alone I purchased well over 200 of these Western Digital drives, but they fail way too often. Its caused me quite a bit of embarrassment over the last few months with a rash of WD SSDs I installed in customers machines about 6 to 8 months ago suddenly failing. I've been replacing these drives under our shops warranty with Samsung drives again because I have no faith in Western Digital SSDs anymore. Currently WD is caught up in a scandal with their external SSDs failing suddenly and I feel like its only a matter of time before many of these drives are also included. Its disappointing because WD makes a great mechanical spindle drive, but whatever engineering culture inherited from their merger with SanDisk they've become cheap, risky, garbage now. Sure they're cheap-ish, but I wouldn't put anything you don't have backed up on them -- nor risk tarnishing your company's branding reputation on. WD has embarrassed me too much to trust them anymore for SSDs. Buyer beware.

Is there a way I can returned these drives? six of them failed after being used.

easy to install, good device

As 0ne who paid $1250 (1978 dollars) for a dual 140K floppy drive for a Commodore Pet, I can only marvel at a terabyte drive South of $50.00. (2023 dollars) That aside, this is a great value and and good speed for a low cost. I recommend it!

Western Digital is a solid brand, and I use more than one kind of drive from their company in my handbuilt PC, easily slotted into my drive storage and formatted without issue, install was less than 5 minutes, easy as can be to those familiar with their PC.

I ordered two SSDs of this same type, and both died on separate occasions when a file transfer failed.

welp it dead, it lasted 3 years all it had to do was keep 1 game and it gave out today its an okay drive but i have drives that been working for over 10 years so its kinda disappointing this went out so soon

Drives are failing after several months. Contacted WD support, and they refer to RMA page where you get to pay to ship their defective drive back, in exchange for the same model drive that will likely fail. Been using SD & WD forever, but going to stick with other brands as their quality now stinks and support stinks as well.

I have less than 5 days of use on this drive and my computer wouldn't boot. After a couple of tries it finally booted, but Hard Disk Sentinel showed bad sectors and now rates the drive as "29% Acceptable Health with estimated remaining lifetime of 152 days". The funny thing is WD Dashboard shows 100% health. Who do I believe? Well just look at the other reviews on the internet for Gen 3 SA510 drives and you'll see loads and loads of failures on these Gen 3 drives. WD keeps issuing firmware updates but who knows if the latest one works. The previous one didn't. After 25 years of only buying WD drives, this will be my last. I have no confidence in these blue series drives and I will be replacing it.

It was dead on arrival, not exactly who should be blamed whether it be shipping or the seller. To be fair, that is what I get for cheaping out on storage, I really liked WD as a company, but I'm not sure I'll be buying from them again.

Good Product

This product was incompatible with Atamos Ninja 5 and now isn’t recognized by my laptop or pc. Fail. Shame I can’t return it. Samsung works fine.

Unreal, lucky I bought a pair of those 500GB WD Blue SA510 and set them up as a RAID 1 array, because one of them just died after a total 34 hours of use!!!
Now I'm reading countless horror stories about those drives, they're more than just unreliable, they die after a few months, tops.
It's as if Western Digital isn't running any quality control on their products!!!
No more WD for me.

Paid a little extra to avoid the cheaper SSD's since this was for my business and it was a waste of money. Both drives that I purchased completely failed in under a year.

I/o error, not able to format, 100% disk usage in performance, slowed down your desktop so much, and no warranty! Don’t even have ways to fix it or replace it!

Hard drive dead in 4 months. I used this in a PC for backing up data. Hard drive was on 24/7 but not much read or write time. Submitted case with WD. Will update rating when they address.

Following up on this:
Contacted Support two weeks ago and nothing. Worked with online chat and the delay in their reply's is upwards of 5 minutes. This will be my last WD purchase.

I bought this and it failed within 2 weeks of setting up on a windows 11 PC. It cannot be read by any device at this point.

I purchased this SSD to install in my laptop, and it initially worked fine. I used my device approximately 20-30 times after installing the SSD. However, it suddenly stopped being detected in the BIOS. Despite trying every possible troubleshooting step, I couldn't resolve the issue. WD only offers a replacement and refuses to provide a refund. I strongly recommend against purchasing this SSD or to promptly return it before it fails on its own. A quick Google search will reveal a high failure rate for this product.

Easy to clone my 1TB HDD to the WD SA510 1TB for quite sometimes (8 hours). After the installation of the drive, I added 8GB RAM more to my 9-year-old Gateway desktop up to MAX (16GB). My boot time cut down from more than 5 minutes to just over 1 minute. Glad to get this SSD drive. Will buy more drives again for couple 5-year old laptops again.
