  • Pieces depicted by race and gender

We bought this book based on the reviews but were disappointed and upset that the book depicts the chess pieces along race/gender lines on the cover and several of the pages. The king and queen are a white man and woman, the knight and rook are unknown, the bishop is a white man on the cover - but the pawns? They’re depicted as a black man and a young white woman. I’m not sure why the pieces were depicted this way but I’m not interested in my kids associating the weakest pieces in the game with minority groups, or the powerful as white only. There have been many black and brown kings and queens In history, many white peasants, many powerful women... to depict the pieces along race and gender lines is to reinforce a worldview I want my kids to see beyond.

  • Very helpful resource to have in the classroom!

I received a free advance copy of this book from the publisher and have been using it in my classroom. The interest in chess has boomed! I asked a 10 year old boy to read it carefully and share his review. This is what he wrote:

I would recommend this book to a seven year old or over. One typo was found in the third chapter. I would even recommend this to a good player because of the strategies. I really like the extra facts. Jessica E. Martin adds a little too many words about her personal opinions of the game. I would give this book 4 1/2 stars. It's really good but it's not the best.

  • Nice How to Book

I confess that I requested this book for myself more than for my kids although I can see them figuring it out before I do. This book was written by a former number one ranked woman chess player who also teaches chess, so it seemed very promising. The book is divided into two parts: the first part is how to actually play chess and the second part are strategies. There are lots of diagrams and a few fun pictures to help you visualize the game. I also bought a chess board to use in conjunction with the book. The author's instructions are easy to follow and organized nicely. I have no trouble following along, although I do have to read things multiple times to really get a grasp on what is being said. Fingers crossed I will be a chess player soon.

  • Good to help with Chess

Chess is a great game and this can help a child in their play. This is a very good educational book. I really like these activity books because I think they are a great way to teach your children. Yet they teach in a fun way and they keep the kids interested. This really held my kids’ interest. They liked the activities a lot. It kept them busy. It was a good way to teach them. There was a lot to it. The book itself is good quality. I like that they are not always on a screen. I would recommend it.

  • chess for kids

My son suddenly became interested in chess, so I ordered the book for him. It has rules explained, with lots of examples. I liked that they were really thorough explained, including when the rule can and cannot be applied, with examples.
Then it tells how to do notations, and then there are a few simple strategies are discussed. It is written in easy to understand language and my son says he likes it.
