Excelent
This book has helped me understand how clinical engineering related processes in healthcare organisations in the USA work. Being a biomedical engineer working in Mexico, this has given me a major insight and orientation on how to develop as a clinical engineer. Many congratulations on the authors and contributors work.
Anyone interested in, aspiring to become, or for those currently involved in the management and maintenance of medical devices will find Dr. Wangâs book a particularly good and timeless resource. Packed into a concise, well-referenced, and well-illustrated 70 pages, this book is a nice read and loaded with practical insight, time-tested, and universally-applicable requirements and recommendations. Starting with and built upon a regulatory framework, this book covers the essential components of an effective medical equipment maintenance and management program â including clinical engineering department management and critical performance monitoring issues. The appendix alone contains five pages of an especially rich and useful listing of internet-based information and data sources. Insuring that a hospitalâs medical devices are properly and consistently managed and maintained to the highest reasonable level of safety and performance is no trivial task. This book offers help and guidance to those healthcare technology managers who are trying to do.
Well organized summary of the current state of medical equipment management. This is just a summary though, don't expect a detailed "text book" on the subject. More like the "coles notes" version, but certainly worth having in your library and the concise nature makes it really easy to read.
Excerpt from Book Review for ACCE News: Tom Judd, ACCE Advocacy, March 2013
Dr. Wang is SMART. So is his new book, just released in 2012. Let's find out why.
The book's content-scope: Regulatory Framework; Core Functions; Clinical Engineering (CE) Department Management; Performance Management; Challenges; Sample Policies; Internet-Data Sources.
Specific
Safety and affordability. Core foundations "laws, regulations, codes, and standards":
Examples: federal/state laws/regulations enforced through CMS - e.g., Medicare accounts for 47% of all U.S. healthcare reimbursement, FDA, OCR (e.g., HIPPA), OSHA, and FEMA, often via hospital accreditation (e.g, TJC). Or standards and codes from NFPA and AAMI.
Re affordability, book is aimed not only at better informing Medical Equipment Management (MEM) practitioners, but overseers as well, e.g., "hospital COO, CFO, VP of Support Services, Supply Chain, Information Technology-IT ... and hospital administrators". "Studies have indicated that annual medical equipment maintenance and management cost is approximately 1% of the total hospital budget, so a 500-bed hospital spends typically around $5 million/year."
Re safety: "In addition to its high maintenance costs, medical equipment is often involved in patient incidents that resulted in serious injuries or deaths."
Measurable
Two (of several) examples cited - Total cost of ownership, and Reliability, usually measured by the availability of equipment for clinical use. An extensive Table defining "Failure Codes" that can help CE departments "determine appropriate adjustments to the maintenance program."
Attainable and Relevant
Sample balanced scorecard for a CE Department: service strategies, efficiency, effectiveness, staff motivation and growth potential.
Timely
In this era of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and medical devices central to attaining Meaningful Use, Dr. Wang concludes with examples that ongoing and timely course corrections are vital to hospital and healthcare management success.
Reviewer's Conclusion
I strongly recommend this resource for the full gamut of healthcare stakeholders: new and experienced Clinical Engineers, for those preparing for CCE certification exams, as well as for those healthcare leaders that will either oversee or work alongside clinical engineers in the U.S. and around the world.
This book should be mandatory in any library of Clinical Engineers because carries a baggage technique that few can garner in lifetime.
In clear and concise language, with chapters well dosed, Wang manages to address most of the doubts and anxieties which chase the professional of healthcare technologies management.
Congratulations to the author!

This book presents up-to-date material about the management of medical equipment and its maintenance, a responsibility of the clinical engineering department (CEDs) in health care institutions. The book covers laws, regulations and codes pertaining to medical devices. It describes core functions of the CEDs as well as their management functions. Computerized documentation and performance measures are discussed. This book is an excellent source of reading and consultation for clinical engineers, biomedical technologists, and managers of CEDs.
This book is a great, up to date collection of information and references related to medical equipment maintenance. It is an excellent reference for practicing clinical/biomedical engineers and BMETs, as well as those entering the profession or pursuing certification (CCE, CBET).
This book elevates our knowledge to contemporary times and is a must-read for VPs in charge of biomed & maintenance cost centers.

This book is a comprehensive guide for crafters looking to start a business. It provides useful information on pricing, marketing, and selling crafts. The author offers tips, encouragement, and specific details on how to better market and sell crafts. Although some readers found the book repetitive and lacking in new information, it is still considered a valuable resource for beginners and small craft operations. Overall, it is a helpful and insightful read.
