HBO's new app, Max, has received negative reviews from users who are facing issues like sign-in problems, errors, ads, missing functionalities, and high prices. The app has also lost its seamless integration with Apple TV app. Users are unhappy with the decision to create a new app instead of updating HBO Max. The new blue colorway has received mixed reactions. Some users find the app terrible, while others like the content and design.

So it begins. The fall of HBO. Once it was the go to premium cable network. Now, it has decided to throw their reputation away and wallow in mediocrity. Not sure what the execs are thinking.
The app wonât accept my subscription. Whenever I sign in, after going through the sign in screens, it defaults back to the original âsign up nowâ screen and then dead ends to an error message. On iPhone and iPad both. And the old app no longer works. Explain to me why you would deactivate your old platform with no transition time, when the new platform isnât ready yet? Can I presume I wonât be charged for the days when I canât access the content Iâve been paying for every month?
Why make a new app just to charge higher prices? Went from no ads to ads because I donât wanna pay $15 dollars a month when $10 seems to have been just fine
no shuffle button
This app quadrupled the number of ads. Iâm canceling this device.
Tried to set up this new HBO that I had with DirecTv, canât even get on! It keeps saying âerrorâ and bounces me off the app. It never shouldâve been changed!!! Absolutely worthless and useless.
Both HBO Max and Discovery+ support integration with Apple TV app to keep track of what youâve watched. This is no longer supported in the brand-new Max app thatâs supposed to replace these services. Why are you removing functionality? The video player is no longer the native player like it is in HBO Max. Again, why are you removing functionality? HBO Max already went through this two years ago! It took a few weeks or months to fix. This is not a great start.
Not sure why, that purple color looked super sharp. The blue is okay. Overall App seems to be about the same in quality. Not crazy about the new color or name .
Why would they make us download a new app and price everything higher? Why would they add a bunch of shows I didnât want? Thereâs a reason I subscribed to HBO and not Discovery - we wanted HBO content. MAX just adds unnecessary fluff. Looking at all the new content itâs so much random content just because of a merger that didnât need to happen. What a shame.
Whyâd you guys auto update my HBO Max app to this new thing. Just so it can tell me not available in my region???
I love the new Max App! Like everyone else I initially thought this was pointless but I was surprised to see the app setup was identical to HBO Max but the app seems to run much smoother and faster.
I was skeptical about Max, but then I opened it and wow!! So organized, so easy to navigate, and such great content all in one place!! Call me a maxxinista Iâm hooked!
Signed in with my credentials on AppleTv and nothing was there. None of my saved list items, no profiles, no watch history. Nothing.
Itâs especially annoying when apps donât display the original air date of a tv series episode or tell you when the next one will air. â2023â doesnât mean diddly squat. If I have to google it, your UX is worthless. Iâm not gonna sign in just to see if it is there yet or not. I have allll the apps and can watch elsewhere.

I really donât like that I have to go seeking a new app for what I was already using. They should have just updated HBO Max.
T r a s h.
Love the new blue colorway. A+ stuff!
Just wish they would release Batgirl.
You absolute cowards
Garbage
I guess all it requires is a brand new app to fix the problem where I can never log into hbo max on my iOS devices lol.
They donât even have trailers for the movies or shows. Itâs dogsh!t, no cap.
HBO made a big deal of the transition to this new app, with many announcements and much fanfare. The result is that my watchlist is gone, my places in the movies and shows I was watching is gone, and now the service is more expensive. Whatâs in it for me?
What'll they call it next year? Just like last time, same content, slightly worse UI. How long do you think it will be until they begin incorporating ads now that they've divorced the platform from the HBO name?
Super dope idea to not only make a senseless rebrand but to make users download a separate app. Very intelligent decision making.
The clock and battery indicator wonât disappear when video is playing.
Havenât had the displeasure of updating to Max on all my devices, but the app is terrible on iPad OS. For reference, Iâm running the app on a 2022 iPad Pro with the latest OS update.
The app struggles with full screen mode. Sometimes leaving the dock bar visible, sometimes the clock/date/battery, sometimes both. Controls for play/pause, etc. permanently disappear, leaving the only route to play/pause content through the control center. Sometime the curser goes away, sometimes it stays indefinitely. When I zoom view (no black bars) it struggles to back to widescreen again and lags video when doing so.
Aesthetically the app is meh. Iâm sure there were IP-related reason for creating the new app but there are zero enhancements in my opinion to the UX/UI over the outgoing HBO Max app. I would not have updated if given the choice and will begrudgingly update the rest of my devices to keep watching my shows.
Iâm sure the app issues will get resolved in a future update but the QA of this initial release was awful.
The developers should have taken used the App Groups entitlement to share data between multiple apps written by the same development team. This was introduced almost 9 years ago, in iOS 8.
The app itself is terrible. $19.99 a month and HDR doesnât even work at all. The video player isnât the iOS one, even after admitting this mistake with HBO Max. Getting around the app is a mess as it jumps to whatever spot it wants to randomly. Thereâs so many more problems too. Just a purely terrible attempt at merging two apps that worked perfectly well.
Downloaded the app, I was logged in and it was fine. Not an hour later it kicks me out, wonât let me login with my provider, and when I try online says Iâm logged in somewhere else. There was nothing from with the old all. HBO needs to stop going through these dumb name changes. Itâs ridiculous. From HBO, to HBO go, HBO max, now Max. Itâs stupid
Off to a terrible start. Having to sign in multiple times via QR code, saying Iâm good to go, asking me to sign in again. Repeat.
so annoying that hbo is doing this change ⌠a matter of time to see what all this is about; pro an increase or two different membership fees
