Recommendations and examples on how to show data in unique and non-traditional ways. Also a push towards turning data into stories. As a researcher I enjoyed both. Not for everyone.
Not only data analysis who build dashboard should read this, but also all the people who view dashboard and reports
This book is great for starter and for even for expert in the field. I worked in the investment dept and we produce several decks a week. I saw alot of my flaws from this book and solutions to them as well!
Over the years every time I have a new employee I buy them a copy as this is such a good practical guide about telling stories with data.
Lots of good ideas.
This book is very clear and insightful. Beautiful visuals. Picked up a lot of useful tips and practical advice that I can apply at my job/teach to others.
I recommend picking up this along with Effective Data Storytelling by Brent Dykes.
Gets you started in building visuals and content. Lots of good tips and tricks and gets you thinking of the story you are trying to tell.
It’s funny I’ve worked as a designer for 25yrs but never really needed to make a dashboard before, this was great in helping me think through my data and what to highlight.
Data is becoming more and more important nowadays! It has helped me deliver better presentations.
This is a Wiley published book, so I was hoping for something somewhat academic I could apply to work.
This book feels mostly like a written lecture.
It meanders through topics, and seems primarily like opinion.
I was hoping to find something with substance to help me educate senior leadership at my company. The fresh college graduates I asked to read it found nothing new or useful in it.
This book lays a great foundation for data storytelling in business.
Most business professionals just need bar, lines, heat maps, and variations of those 3. This explains how to present those in the clearest manner. Knaflic writes in an clear and conversational manner, which makes this data-heavy book a very easy read.
Obviously if you're more advanced and use SQL, python, etc. for data viz, you need a more advanced book. But if you're just getting started in business presentations, this is the best place to start.
So many concepts covered using work-based problems. Excellent visuals to emulate. Death to pie charts and other food based charts (donut, spaghetti). Great job!
This book is concise. Every sentence in it imparts very useful lesson for day to day application. I love this.
I had to prepare a presentation in the middle of this book and the “minor” changes made a world of difference without my thinking that I was sacrificing information. Get the both the Audible and printed versions.
This book was recommended by a co-worker. I am in data visualization/business intelligence and this definition helped advance my career. My improvement on my dashboard were apparent to me right away and was recognized by others through feedback.
Gives the rationale behind layout with great examples. Also, the book is beautifully layed out. A really good resource.
Good quality, clean, like new book
I’ve made a career in analytics, report writing, and visualization. This book helps me keep the mechanics in perspective and offers a great guide to best practices.
Essential, mandatory, elemental, critical, indispensable.
Don't just show data, show a story. This book has really challenged my preconceived ideas and years of linear thinking. Data shows a story and this explains how to draw that story out in a meaningful way.
One of the best story telling books I’ve bought so far. The examples included are practical and easy to understand. I will definitely recommend it to anyone who’s looking to improve their story telling skills or data visualization skills
Repetitive trivial nonsense
Product arrived with the bottom corner of the spin destroyed, so much for a new book
I am enjoying this. The one thing I would say is that I spent an inordinate amount of time looking for the accompanying materials. I was 3 chapters in when I finally found them. That is a knock on Amzn, not on this book, because it is their interface. But it would have been nice if the author's website had the accompanying materials directly on that website. Either way, if you need to present data to people, I highly recommend you taking the time to read/listen to this book.
There is some good stuff in here.
I like Knaflic’s focus on intentionality. For her, the defaults are something that should be avoided, or at least justified.
I like how she looks at the presentation of graphic information as a story arc. There is one thing that you want to focus on to create actionable decisions. This is best, as she describes, if you are presenting. There are limitations if you have a static document that has information for multiple stakeholders.
The book is accessibly written with a clean font and plenty of examples.
However, I do have to push back a bit. She follows Tufte in trying to eliminate data ink. Part of the intentionality is that you have less and less information on the page and every thing you includes helps tell your story. For me though that leads to a sameness. You want your audience to not have to think so hard. You want to make sure they don’t have their eyes glaze over. But that means that everything is very simple with a muted palette. The author notes that some of these are just her preference, but the mode of thinking has become influential. Part of me wants my audience to do some work in understanding the text I put in front of them. It means a level of engagement that I worry a too-simple graph leaves out.
A wonderful read, and instantly applied what I learned to my work (and my supervisor noticed the difference!). Will recommend to others.
Excellent book. Written in an easy to understand and conversational format. I am going to utilize this book a lot for my work in Health, Safety and Wellbeing reporting. Thanks Cole!
This book and the workbook are great tools to have in your business toolbox. I appreciate Cole's work and how she brings the reader along in her work. These books and her podcast are must haves for business presentations that make an impact.
Great book for developing senses on data visualization strategies and understanding which tool/graph to use under specific circumstances.
I found this book near the mailboxes. It was thrown/donated by someone who did not need it.
It's really good ...I studied it for 2 days for a couple of hours
you do not need to read each of the chapters...just browse through to get the main idea...also look at the case studies at the end.
Today I did a presentation and everyone really liked my charts and how I showed data with numbers and charts.
