Review of a Cheap Spray Gun for Painting

I'm no pro when it comes to spraying paint, but I've done some with fixing up tools and old boats and recently got one of the seriously cheapo guns (the 14 dollar purple one) and have actually gotten fairly good results with it.

I ordered this one because at this price point, these are throwaways after a certain amount of usage or time unless you are super fastidious in cleaning it out every time. That's just not me. Its a virtually identical design to the purple gun so it should perform about the same. This one comes with extra spray tips including a 1.7 and 2.5 as well as the 1.4 installed. It also comes with a regulator which is a bonus over the super cheap gun and a wrench and brush. The paint cup is metal instead of plastic. I'm not sure that is such a good thing. The lid is a friction fit instead of a screw top. The plastic cup and screw top will never pop off, and won't leak. Can't say that about the aluminum cup.

The regulator seems to work well, adjusts the pressure up and down ok. Not the greatest quality, but at this price point be happy for what you get. The major issue with it so far is that it does leak air with the 1.4 nozzle, even regulated down to 30psi. The purple gun doesn't leak any air and I did not try to disassemble it to see why or try one of the other needle sets to see if they made any difference. As long as it doesn't push any fluid through, then the air leak is more of nuisance than anything else.

The first thing I did when this sprayer arrived was to disassemble it and look for any metal bits, twisted O-rings, and all was well. This is a common design for a HVLP sprayer and all the controls are similar to other HVLP units. I appreciated the various sized nozzles, as it's always a pain to try to track them down, and used the two of the nozzles for applying a 2-part, epoxy primer, and a basecoat color for a motorcycle gas tank (haven't applied the clearcoat yet.

The sprayer worked well and produced a good pattern with both products....I did test beforehand to make sure the pattern was correct and that there wasn't appreciable overspray or orange-peel.

But...that aluminum paint cup.....agreed, this is a gravity paint gun, and you would never hold it upside down, but I think we can agree that you might be tilting it at some point while spraying...so why ruin a solid painter by furnishing it with a completely lame top for the aluminum paint cup that looks like a recycled pie pan. It just secures to the top of the cup with a force fit. It was so flimsy that I could simply squeeze it to make it fit a bit better, but I couldn't trust it not to pop off at the worst possible time and I ended up using blue painters tape to secure and seal the cup.

It looks like cup is secured to the paint gun with a standard thread fitting, so I'll be replacing the aluminum cup with a plastic cup that has a far more reliable top.

A good HVLP gun, appreciate the extra nozzles, but that top has to go
