We really enjoyed the tour and listening to the very knowledgeable tour guide about the history of Norwich, of which we found very interesting. We have been meaning to do this underground tour for a long time, and we were not disappointed.

Really interesting tour. The tour guide Lisa really knew her stuff. I learnt so much about the city I’ve always lived in.We loved seeing the old shop front under Ponds shoe shop.I think the only thing that I would have loved was if we could have seen a bit more of the same sort of stuff but if it’s not there then it’s not there!

Very enjoyable,Max our guide was incredibe with afountain of knowledge, was good to learn historyof norwich and things we did not know, only down sizw was i would have liked more tunnels.

Our enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide Holly, gave us over a hour of solid, undivided attention. The street area is actually quite small, but on 3 levels, all with their own slightly different histories. However, the tour is full of quirky and interesting history, strange and sometimes gruesome details. Left me eager to find out more about some of the things I'd heard.

What a fascinating glimpse into Norwich's history. Our guide Nyree was engaging and had lots of interesting stories to relay. The old street seen on the tour definitely deserves to be preserved and there are so many layers of history right in front of your eyes. Will look into doing another Shoebox tour on our next visit to Norwich.

We booked this tour for us, our teenage children and their grandparents. The tour guide Oli was very engaging and knowledgeable. The tour fascinating and gave an insight into Norwich's history over the years. I would highly recommend and will definitely some of the other tours available. Definatley value for money.

The first time at a local tour. Will definitely do some more.We done the tavern tour with the host Nyree. Very knowledgeable and she had a great way of explaining things to make it very interesting. Lived here fornover 40yrs and learnt lots about our city. Great sense of humour also. Looking forward to our next tour.

This was the tour to end all tours! The stars were aligned when this was booked in! My stepfather and I descended into Norwich’s bowels, led by our guide for the hour: high quality historian Holly, to take in the mesmerising sights of a medieval weaver’s cottage and untouched medieval shop frontage, with original building materials poking out in parts. It was mind boggling to be standing in the middle of a well preserved street scene below the Norwich we all love and know. I loved the alleyway back out to London Street and the stable where horses 🐴 were kept. It was a captivating tour which taught us about many Norfolk stories and characters, and I was open-mouthed for most of it! I felt invigorated following the tour and inspired to learn more about the city and its past inhabitants and places, and look forward to more Shoebox tours with historian Holly who was a very compelling and instructive teacher. Thank you Shoebox, and also a great business ethos! 👞

We did the Matriarchs, Mayors and Merchants Tour on Saturday 30 September with Max. Max made the whole experience great, he had so many facts at his fingertips - far too many to remember unfortunately (in fact we could do with a factual sheet at the end of the tour to refresh the memory). Discovered facts had no idea about.

This was the second tour I've done with the Shoebox and once again it was a fantastic experience! Max our tour guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgable. He is a great story teller and we learned many interesting facts about Norwich. Will definitely try their other tours in the future whenever I have friends and family visiting!

Wow, I’ve lived in Norwich ALL my life and would never have guessed what lies below this shop. it was wonderful to see this piece of history of our city. We brought 4 friends who we’re staying with us and all thought it was wonderful. Well done HOLLY our wonderful tour guide who was so informative and funny. I would thoroughly recommend this tour.

Tavern Tour with Max/Hidden Street Tour with Nyree/City of Centuries Tour with Roger/ All were fantastic guides. Informative and fun. It is the best way to get a feel for Norwich if you are a visitor and this group is doing great work for the local community. I would definitely do all of these tours again.

Spent just over an hour with Holly, learning about the history of the street and Norwich/Norfolk. Her enthusiasm made it an entertaining hour of facts, gory details and some legends.The tour is contained within quite a small footprint under modern buildings do does not involve a massive amount of walking but does make use of some stairs and uneven floors.

Norwich is full of history and this tour incorporates history and beer with lots of interesting information whilst walking between old hostelries. Well presented by the guide with lots of interesting facts.

This was a fascinating walk with a genial, amusing and informative guide. The stretch of the underground street hidden beneath modern-day Norwich was a little shorter than anticipated but was nevertheless crammed with interest and with the detail provided by the excellent guide painted a vivid picture of the history and development of the area at the foot of Norwich Castle

The tour was very informative, the guide was knowledgeable and made the tour entertaining. Would recommend going.

It was a very interesting tour of the city and the guide took us to places we would never have found on our own. I particularly liked the monastery area and the little park by the river.I think the experience could have been improved by scheduling in a stop half way through the tour somewhere we could have had a 15-20 minute break for a sit down and a drink. It was quite tiring for some of us older people and it would have given us a chance to chat together.

A thoroughly enjoyable tour, with a knowledgeable and pleasant guide, and the added bonus of being in a cooler place on a very hot day. Although I’m a Norfolk boy, and have lived In Norwich for 45 years, I learned a lot about the history of the city. My wife and I were joined on the tour by another couple, and four was just about perfect. I think if a group was much bigger, it would be a bit stretched. Although stairs were reasonably steep, there were hand-rails, and the slightly uneven floors in some places were not enough to be a problem, even though we are in our seventies.

We did the Tavern trail tour. It was brilliant. Beautiful walk. Very knowledgeable guide.she was very considerate making sure the pace was right for the group . Learnt lots about Norwich would def recommend

Brilliant escape room with fun props, and our host was great,its an intriguing location too,very atmospheric.Wish we could do it again!

Great Norwich Knowlege tour by our guide Ollie who was a natural at bringing history to life. Plenty of fascinating and amusing stories, often revealing some suprising connections. Great to have some of the City's architectural gems explained. Highly recommended.

Really quite fascinating.Tour taken with Nyree on 2 September. This was a really interesting glimpse at the past of Norwich. Whilst it is only a small area that remains underneath the old Ponds shoe shop it is a tour well worth taking.Nyree was excellent and made it an engaging tour. Would definitely recommend.

This is the second I’ve been and found out more fascinating history this time around as both tour guides I’ve had concentrated on very different aspects of the history.Holly was very friendly and knowledgeable and pitched the information perfectly for the group.

It was with some trepidation that I took my 15 year old son on the hidden street tour today. I wasn't sure it would be his cup of tea, but we both had a brilliant time. Our tour guide, Holly, was knowledgeable and witty, thoroughly engaging and entertaining throughout. I'll definitely be booking one of their other tours soon.

A fascinating tour led by the very knowledgeable and charismatic Ollie who had us all enthralled. Even my 14yr old son was captivated which was quite an achievement! Would highly recommend. Thank you!

An alternative view of Norwich and it's rich history wonderfully and humorously told by Ollie. Stories of enterprise, x-rays, tunnels, medieval streets, undercrofts, disappearing buses, posh folk and murder! As someone who has known Norwich all my life, there were new discoveries beneath the unassuming ship on Castle Meadow. Whether you're Norfolk born and bred or here for a visit, you won't be disappointed with this hidden tour. P.S. Norwich is definitely better than London ;-D

Very interesting to find out more of Norwich's history. Our guide Matt went above and beyond with his knowledge and although there wasn't a great deal to see, his knowledge fed the imagination. It was excellent and we have already recommended this experience to our friends.

My husband and I had a tour to ourselves, which was brilliant! Our guide, Nyree, was brilliant. Lively, engaging, great knowledge and presentation and good humour. Having done a few of the activities that The Shoebox Experiences offer, I can safely say these don't disappoint. Most recently, we did the Marble Hall Tour, and what a tour it was! Lisa is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and is very receptive to questions during the tour. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Mum and I went here for a tour today and Ollie was great, super knowledgeable and engaging, and happy to chat with us and have a laugh rather than being rigid to a script. We had a great time and will 100% recommend it. We're def coming back for the escape room too!

Went on a Shoebox experience today with our 12yr old granddaughter. We were with another family of 3 adults and 3 under 10 yr old boys. Ollie was our guide and he kept them all enthralled with his tales of years gone by and was funny too. Fascinating tour although I personally was a little disappointed as I thought I was going to see more of the Norwich underground past but Ollie’s storytelling more than made up for that. Will definitely go on another of their tours in the future.

I got a gift voucher for a Shoebox experience and booked a Hidden Street tour. Didn’t know what to expect but it was really good fun (and educational). Finding out about life ‘below ground level’ was fascinating. Ollie was our guide and he was entertaining and knowledgeable: full of historical fun facts about Norwich. The tour will appeal to adults and children alike and is well worth an hour of your time.

Tavern Trail Tour was excellent. We have lived in area for years and were amazed at the amount of knowledge and hidden places that we never knew or saw before. Our guide (Matt or Mac, I think, sorry!) was brilliant and really bought the experience to life. If you have any interest in exploring the city or history then you’ll love this. Fully intend on booking one of their other tours!

I live in Norwich & love local history & finally got around the taking the time to see these buildings. An amazing & very full hour, that is well worth the money & the time. Local or tourist, this is well worth your time, with lots to learn & a tour guide that knows their topic.

Amazed to discover these hidden places! Tyree was a great tour guide. I liked that we were just a small group (eight people) as plenty of opportunity to explore and ask questions. Looking forward to doing the escape game!

Very enjoyable evening learning the history of this remarkable old building – and learning a lot about the evolution of Norwich over the past thousand years at the same time.Our guide was very knowledgable and personable, and she had some great anecdotes to bring the tour to life. As with any building of this age, there are low ceilings and winding stairs, perhaps making the tour less suitable for young children. But if you're an adult or an older child interested in history and architecture, this building and this tour offers a unique portal into the past – and you support a social enterprise at the same time.

We did our second Shoebox experience tour yesterday. Having previously done the below the street one we opted for the Aviva marble hall tour. This Gobsmackingly amazing hall is an absolute must see in our beautiful city. Designed by George Skipper, brilliant locally famous architect most well known for the Royal Arcade. The talk about the building and origins of insurance and Norwich Union ( now Aviva) was really intesting, informative and at times amusing. The shoebox guides are so knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this and any of their tours which help to fund their excellent charity work .

Lisa was a wonderful guide and very knowledgeable about the history of the building and Norwich. Maybe not an ideal tour for very young children but great for us history buffs.

On a very wet Norfolk day we decided to spend an hour in the company of Ollie as he took us on a historical journey of Norwich’s past. Very informative and highly entertaining hour spent. The ground is fairly uneven so suitable footwear is a must.

It’s a non profit organisation , so great to know money raised goes back to the charity so worth every penny both for tourists and locals

Really enjoyed our Knowledge tour of Norwich on Monday with Holly. As locals we learnt alot about our 'Fine City", very amusing and entertaining couple of hours. At first we went on the street tour under Norwich. This was a fabulous experience made even better by the very entertaining and very knowledgeable guide Alex I believe was his name. After this we did the escape room. This we can also highly recommend it was great fun and there were only 3 of us and we managed to escape with seconds to spare. The escape room is also done in the old street under the city. Very enjoyable afternoon

My friend and I greatly enjoyed our visit to the hidden street last Saturday. This was my second visit but I can honestly say that I enjoyed it just as much as the first. Nyree was an excellent guide who brought the past to life with facts, and stories of possible scenarios. It has inspired us both to learn more about the history of Norwich.

Our tour guide started off with telling us about the shop as in its history, interesting although I come from Norwich and knew what she was telling us inside and outside, even told her things she didn't know about the site! To tourists, interesting talk.We went downstairs, not for people with mobility issues and/sight impacts. We didn't go very far though, I thought we were going to see more. I guess it will be getting bigger with more Excavation.£15.00 each possible a tad expensive. Although as I said, I come from Norwich so knew the majority of what she told us, but for a tourist, good experience.

Amazing trip to an underground street from 1800s. Great guide who was very knowledgeable. Felt you were in those times. Highly recommended.

Fab snapshot of Norwich history truly aspirationally explained by Max. Although we only visit a small snap-shot of what it was like we were gien so much information in such a short space of time. We learned so much about life in those days anywhere in England.

Going below street level and nearly 600 years of history to a time when businesses worked out of small cramped an d dangerous and difficult conditions

An absolutely superb tour of the street beneath Norwich, our tour guide Max was so well informed and knew the history back to front! He was a true professional, carrying on despite interruptions from children. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and this was due to Max and his enthusiasm and willingness for questions!! Thank you.

Having done a previous tour with Shoebox, I was slightly disappointed with this tour. Our previous guide was extremely knowledgeable and talked non-stop. Our guide on Saturday wasn't as good, reading most of the tour from a script, which lacked personal involvement. He also kept his sunglasses on the whole time, again this felt as if he wasn't so involved in the tour. Also, although the tour was interesting it had too many 'dead spots', where we were walking with no information being given along the way. I appreciate this is a newish tour and some tweaking may be required. An example would be, that we walked from the Lanes to the Guildhall, but instead of using the small (historically interesting ) Lanes we just walked along the main path at the back of Jarrolds.All that being said we both enjoyed the tour and will be booking 'The Hidden Streets Tour' in the near future.

This intriguing subterranean trip was made entertaining by Holly, our well informed guide who had some bizarre tales about some former inhabitants of Norwich.

Nyree was a happy, quirky, very intelligent guide for our Hidden Streets tour. It's not very expensive, and the profit goes to support really great initiatives in the city. Hidden Streets is a deep exploration of one building, not really an extensive exploration, but it was fun and great for any weather. Nyree even tipped us off to the best pizza in town!

Max the guide was so knowledgeable, made the experience so interesting. We went off afterwards looking for antiurine devices and weaver windows.

Extremely personable and engaging guide. My friend and I were the only people on the Tavern Trail walk so we were lucky to have our guide to ourselves. He was very knowledgeable and the whole walk was most enjoyable. The walk ended at the Murderers Arms where we had a well deserved drink (included in the cost of the tour) and a pleasant lunch where we were able to obtain a discount on the cost as another perk of going on the tour. I've been on several Shoebox Experiences and have never been disappointed. All the guides know their subject well and are able to offer interesting anecdotes throughout the walk.

Our guide (Max) was really knowledgeable, he answered all our questions without being fazed. He held everybody’s attention and spoke clearly and well. He delivered all the information in an interesting way and made it fun. His enthusiasm for his subject shone through. I learnt a lot of things I didn’t know. Our family of four all enjoyed this tour, it was fascinating. Our children are older (30+28)

We did the fascinating hidden street tour, which gives a real insight into how people in Norwich lived not quite so long ago, and the very real challenges they faced. Our tour guide Max was warm and infectiously enthusiastic, and had an astonishing level of knowledge of the subject matter. Very highly recommended for everyone.

Well what can I say. Max, our guide was very informative, answered questions that were asked. Didn’t really know what to expect and was I surprised. Fantastic tour, was unreal at times of the things that happened and how people lived, maybe should read survived, in times gone by, hits home to how fortunate we are to be alive now. The beginning of the tour was about the owners of the building we see above street level. Then the trip down stairs to the weaver’s workshop and living area. Down more stairs to the hidden street, then a little twist at the end. Max was very knowledgeable and passionate about this wonderful building. Took my grandsons, 14 years and 11 years, we had the best time. We would highly recommend you sign up and see this for yourself.

We looked forward to this and we were not disappointed! Norwich is an amazingly historical city with lots of quirks which this tour illustrated perfectly. Mat (?) was wonderfully informative and obviously had in depth knowledge of his subject. He was enthusiastic and fun. Obviously one had to use one’s imagination in parts but he managed to paint enough of it in for you to get what it was like way back when. As a family we’ve done both the Hidden Street tour & Marble Hall Tour. Both were very interesting & informative. The guides were friendly & welcoming. Highly recommend these tours for a bit of Norwich history.

The TipsyTavern Trail with Lisa and trainee Nyree was great. Both informative and fun! They took us down yards and alleys we hadn’t explored before and to some new watering holes including The Merchant’s House with its beautiful and fascinating courtyard. Lisa chose our locally sourced drinks which were all delicious, and nobody got too tipsy! Thank you both for a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon tour. We will definitely book for any future trails.

A group of 15 Taverham WI members went on the Tavern Trail although it was a cold windy day we thoroughly enjoyed the walk. Starting at Bishops Bridge we were guided through Norwich with our excellent guide giving us many facts about the city's history, architecture and brewery trade. Ending up at the Murderers on Timberhill where we enjoyed lunch and a free drink. We are looking forward to our next trip which is to the Marble Hall.

Wonderful hidden gem, so much history and atmosphere in this rediscovered basement.You certainly get a great insight into the history of Norwich all the better by being delivered by an engaging and friendly guide, Nyree.Also a great charity to supportSpike gives it double thumbs up

Being relative newcomers to Norfolk we were keen to learn more about life in Norwich hundreds of years ago. Holly brought the subject alive with a very informative and entertaining hour under the shoebox building where there was a “street” before Castle Meadow was developed.

Amazing!! We learnt so much not just about the hidden street but about Norwich in general, the castle & surrounding areas. Our tour guide was absolutely brilliant & so enthusiastic. I would highly recommend this tour to any tourist visiting AND local people

I was really curious to find out about 'hidden Norwich', did not really know what to expect. Although I was a little disappointed as far as how big the 'hidden' part is (the walk is very, very short), I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Max, our guide, was very entertaining and knowledgeable. He took us back in history, explaining about the 'hidden' parts of Norwich. This more than made up for the disappointment I felt about the length of the walk. Very interesting to learn about Norwich through the centuries.

Brilliant tour by Max. It was so very interesting to learn the History of our fine City and how that developed into the hidden streets. As mentioned in other reviews the bit of street they have, that we can experience, is small but fascinating and paints a real picture of how Norwich would have been years ago.

Starting with local shoe history at the old Ponds shop Holly was a brilliant and entertaining guide. It was great to understand how a street could be ‘underground’ but now we know! And left us wanting more exploration/excavation as clearly this is a very small part of a bigger story. Shoebox does great work for local communities so that was a big tick too

Not exactly what we expected when the marketing spoke about ‘hidden street’. We imagined we would be walking down a whole street, rather than just through the very short bit that we saw. That said, tour guide Max did a phenomenal job of presenting so many intriguing bits of history, in a very skilful, engaging way. Brilliant! So we’d definitely recommend the tour, but maybe expectations could be managed a bit in the advertising.

Really really enjoyed the Underground Street tour. Honestly thought we knew Norwich well but fascinated to discover a whole new aspect of the city below our feet. Our tour guide Max was incredibly knowledgeable, brought the whole tour to life and gave us tips on what to go looking for after the tour had finished - which we did! Highly recommended.

Tour guide Holly was just fantastic and so knowledgeable about the history of Norwich. We went on the Tavern Trail but that really doesn’t do it justice as it involved much more than just pubs. Highly recommended to both locals, wanting to learn a bit more about their city , and visitors who want a one off look at how Norwich came to be the beautiful city that it is.

Holly was very knowledgeable and it was very interesting to get an insight into Norwich’s past, warts and all. 5* for Holly and for the work that the hub there are doing. Maybe 2* for the actual experience of ‘walking the street’. Think of it as a double garage sized walk, the name shoebox gives it away now I think of it. So lower your expectations as to what you will actually see. The group I was with were disappointed with the actual visuals . So was it worth £15 probably not TBH. If however you take the view that you are contributing to the upkeep of this very small section of Norwich’s past and supporting the projects that Shoebox fund then yes.

Holly was very knowledgeable and funny. For us, she made the tour. I was a little bit disappointed to be truthful. Tour was smaller than I thought. Can see it all on the shoebox site pictures. Just the one main room/street but the information makes it interesting, (especially the 'off piste' bits!). Was it worth £15 each? Mmmm.... Not really! Just my opinion!.... Was an hour long though. Maybe.

I was once told that the best presents don’t come in boxes - well, a Christmas gift of a Shoebox Hidden Street Tour proved that wrong!The offer is dead simple - an explanation of the Shoebox story and a trip beneath the old shop to the remains of a medieval street that was built in the ditch around Norwich Castle and which, overtime, was lost as new building went over the top of it.Maybe that doesn’t sound too much but seeing the old shops and the stories of how the inhabitants lived (and loved in what became an adjunct to the red-light district) was fascinating.And what made it special was the humour of the presentation (our guide Holly was a laugh) - whilst being an historic marvel (when facts and dates could have been a dull overkill) the package of stories became an irresistible concentration of easily digestible information

An amazing experience visiting the underground tunnels with The Shoebox Experiences. Max was absolutely brilliant, sharing huge amounts of information about the history of the hidden area but also of Norwich through the ages. Our whole party greatly enjoyed our time and would definitely recommend visiting to anyone that is considering it!

We took part in the Hidden Streets tour on Bank Holiday Monday. The tour was really well organised and full of great details about the history of the area, the people who lived there and the events around it. Max, the tour guide, was excellent and made it a great time. We thorouoghly enjoyed the time and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Norwich.

The Tipsy Tavern Trail Tour - Wow what a great tour of Norwich, and some good local beers to try on route if you fancy, there was also soft drinks available at each stop if you have to drive home afterwards. Many thanks to our guide Max who was brilliant really knowledgeable on the history of the places we visited and he made the tour really enjoyable, we had a lovely time and would highly recommend this tour if you want to have a stroll around some hidden gems in the city. This is the second time we have booked a tour with the Shoebox Community hub and they are really good, and they provide a great service to the local community and taking the tours helps them fund their work. All in All 10 out of 10

A fascinating tour of a hidden underground street at the site of a former shoe shop in the centre of Norwich. Max, our guide, was both well-informed and entertaining, and covered a great deal of the history of what was once England's second city. It's amazing that you can regularly walk past a building and not realise what is, or has been, there !

I booked a tour for my wife’s 40th birthday. The experience from booking, communication throughout and the actual tour was exceptional! When we arrived for the tour we recorded a warm welcome from Holly. The tour guide Holly was full of enthusiasm and knowledge and really did make the experience brilliant. A really interesting, informative tour of a hidden street underneath an old shop in Castle Meadow in Norwich. The tour guide was exceptional imparting his knowledge and making it fun, of the street through the ages. We were all engrossed. I would recommend it to anyone.

Although I had visited this underground space when it was first opened up a few years ago and part of it was overgrown with vegetation this was my first visit on one of the organised tours. Max was an enthusiastic and well-informed guide who imparted lots of information (I'm sure that only the limitations of time prevented him from telling us even more) and I came away knowing a lot more than I did before the tour. I was especially pleased that the earlier misleading talk of tunnels when the tours started has been dropped. The fifteenth century undercroft is worth seeing, especially as it is one of only a handful of Norwich's undercrofts that are open to the public. I would definitely recommend the tour to anyone who is interested in Norwich's history.

I booked a tour online for my 9 year old son, partner, mother in law and myself. It was easy to book online and I received an email confirmation once booked. Our guide Frances was welcoming, friendly and engaging. She really knew her history of the former Pond's shoe shop, my son and all of us really enjoyed the tour. We were able to take pictures and ask lots of questions also. Really happy with the tour and overall experience, will book another tour in the future!

Holly was brilliant! She really knows her history and brought the stories to life. Even though the tour doesn’t cover a huge distance, we were thoroughly entertained and definitely enjoyed learning about the hidden street and local history. Great fun!

We went on the secret tunnels tour. Our guide Max's knowledge and story telling skills made this a really amazing experience. This tour surpassed any expectations. Our guide Max really made it so interesting, and I'll never look at Norwich in the same way again! I went with my husband - who also loved it - and my ten year old. I would say it's prob most suitable for adults and children over 8, as there is a lot of talking. Slightly pricey for just an hour, but worth it in my opinion - especially as the money goes to good causes.

We went on our second shoebox experience it was lovely to meet such a knowledgable person Holly who made the trip around Norwich just perfect - we had perfect weather and really enjoyed going around Norwich seeing things that we have never noticed before - we particularly enjoyed hearing the history and gruesome details from witches being drowned to barbers not just cutting hair - thank you Holly for making our experience such a pleasure.

It was a small group, perfect for the space. Our guider, Mat, was friendly and entertaining and provided a long, detailed history of where we began the tour and throughout the passage of the underground streets. It was fascinating and knowledgeable and we enjoyed it very much; even the small boy who came along with his Grandpa found it interesting. The weather for our visit to Norwich was looking pretty rubbish, so I was looking for indoor attractions when I came across the Shoebox Experiences Hidden Street tour. Myself and 2 friends did the Tavern Trail Tour last Saturday. We were the only ones on it so we got virtually a personal trip which was nice. Holly was a very good host, entertaining, knowledgeable and fun. The weather could have been better, it was cold and windy but this didn't detract from the tour as Holly held our attention with her brilliant rhetoric. We learned a lot. After the tour we had a wind down in the Murderers with a free drink and 25% off our lunch. What's not to like?! I would definitely recommend.

We were very lucky in securing two places on the Marble Hall tour and the tour certainly didn’t disappoint. Max was our guide and pointed out all the facts relating to the Hall ie how the building became the people behind this impressive Hall. We were not rushed around we had time to indulge ourselves. This was a lovely hour spent in the fine city. We were amazed by how beautiful the hall is and the surrounding boardrooms. The building is not that old 120 years, but there was no expense spared, and it is virtually unchanged since. Well worth a visit. Great to see the original heat pump too!

Max guided us through this hidden area of our beautiful city, his knowledge and stories kept us enthralled throughout our visit, learning so much about how Norwich developed throughout the ages.This is well worth a visit whether local or just staying over, access is restricted so not for anyone with mobility challenges though.

Max, our guide was nothing short of professional in his presentation. Informative, approachable and humorous during the tour from start to finish.The 'stories' of bygone eras had you captivated, bewildered and amused.You're challenged to comprehend where you are, how it was, and came to be, in this present day.After his brief welcome speech which included h&s, and the charity behind the tour along with his thanks for purchasing a ticket, made you feel welcome and part of the Shoebox family. The walk from the reception area down to the basement where the tour really starts, sets the scene, as you collect your lamp and immediately tune your eyes and ears into the first of numerous scenarios from bygone eras.The 16 year old girl and Norwich Castle being our favourite.......so pay attention and believe women were and always have been leaders. As for value for money, the tour price with what you gained from the experience was far greater vfm than our car parking at £7 (arrived early to do some shopping and perhaps chose a more expensive location).Wish we had purchased the souvenir book to reflect back on, perhaps on another visit to Norwich/Shoebox for another tour?

Excellent from start to finish the tour of the marble house. An amazing space. Such a knowledge of the history. I very much appreciated the kindness of the tour leader, waiting for my husband and I to "join the gang" from the lift (being unable to use the stairs).

We did a history pub tour on Saturday 18th February with Holly our Guide who was very knowledgeable and made our afternoon very interesting. There's a lot more to old Norwich than just the old pubs and we found the whole afternoon tour a brilliant experience. A welcome drink at the end made the tour even better. There were four of us in our party and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

I can't believe I spent so much time in the city without knowing what was happening beneath my feet. It is a fairly short tour - and you will be going up and down various steps.

Went on the Surrey Street Magnificent Marble Hall tour. Wow! I won't spoil anyone's "wow" moment by saying why....just that you need to see for your self!. Nestled in the city centre is this fantastic building...admired from the outside.... and curious to the inside...so book a tour with The Shoebox Experience and find out why. The tour guide Lisa was as always knowledgable, informative and ready to add in anecotes of info for the visitors listening pleasure. Questions were fired at her from most of the crowd which she answered with unwavering accuracy!!.... So if you've ever wondered past and thougt....mmmm'i'd love to see inside the Norwich Union/Aviva building.... go!

We really enjoyed this tour. The tour guide (Max) was so knowledgeable. He talked us through the history of the site and how it fitted into the wider story of Norwich. Where people had questions he answered them with humour and a great deal of detail. Although in a small area there was such a lot to see and take in.We can thoroughly recommend this tour. Big thanks to Max.

Loved the lantern light tour! Had previously attended the daytime tour, but this didn't affect our enjoyment of the lantern tour. Great stories of Norwich I hadn't heard before and the tour guide (Max) was excellent, knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely worth a visit!

We enjoyed being on the first ever tour by Shoebox Experiences of the Magnificent Marble Hall. Our 2 guides were excellent, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Great insight into the origins of Norwich Union and yet more history discovered about this great city. Well worth going on especially when the monies from the tour go to such a great social enterprise.

The hidden streets of Norwich tour was astonishingly good. Max the tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The remains of the medieval street deep below Castle Meadow are not extensive but the tour easily filled an hour with fascinating details of life and commerce there from the 13th century to the 1950s. Excellent value for money. Unsurprisingly there are some steep stairs down, but the tour emerges back at the modern street level without having to climb back up again.

I was in Norwich visiting some friends when they suggested we explored the “secret tunnels of Norwich.” We had the most fabulous tour guide, Max, who is perhaps one of the most knowledgeable and interesting tour guides that I have ever had the chance to listen to! He made every aspect of the experience fun as well as educational. I would 100% recommend this tour to anyone visiting Norwich or even to some of the locals hoping to learn more about the long and varied history of the city of Norfolk.

Excellent tour for a very worthy cause. Not too much of great interest to see on the tour, but Max our guide, made up for this with his enthusiasm and extreme knowledge of bygone times and some of the history surrounding the streets, castle and old jail etc. Surprising exit location from the tour! A very entertaining and interesting way to spend an hour. The host was very knowledgeable about the history and ghostly tales from this part of the city. Really interesting to see part of the underground street below castle meadow and see how people lived. Would recommend!

We came for a night-time lantern tour in December and were pleasantly surprised.It's a short distance but longer duration-style tour, offering up some scary tales from Norwich's past, working history and folklore in together with a splash of archaeology to boot. Interestingly, we heard a true-life story here that dovetailed in with the back-story of a Cryptic Escape escape room we did two days earlier in Norwich.Also great that the income from tours here go to support local social initiatives to improve the community. Wear comfy shoes though!

Our guide was brilliant, friendly, fascinating stories and the underground rooms added the perfect atmosphere to the tour.Informative and great fun. Will try the Tavern trail spring time. We thoroughly enjoyed our Hidden Street tour last night, led by our fabulous guide, Holly. Friendly, informative and fun, this was a fascinating way to spend an hour and learn some local history. Holly’s enthusiasm for historical facts is infectious and she managed to pack so much information into the hour-long tour - some shocking, some funny and some quite bizarre!The tour is run by Shoebox Enterprises, a social support enterprise, so it is good to know that by attending the tour we were also helping such a good cause.

Who knew?? What a great tour telling the fascinating history of Norwich. Brought to life by Max (who was excellent). Really well worth a visit.

An excellent insight into the history of Norwich on the underground tour. Our guide Max, was so enthusiastic and excellent at making the history come alive 11 out 10 for Max. Would have liked it to be a bit more visual but still a great experience and will be trying some of the others.

Great escape room with interesting history. This escape room had lots of props and relevant equipment making it particularly interesting. I’d say it was quite hard but good for those who like a challenge with lots of unusual puzzles. Staff were really friendly and attentive.

Someone told us about this tour and, as we had friends from London staying for Christmas, we decided to book. Cannot speak highly enough of our guide Hollywho was funny and a font of knowledge. Not only was it interesting for our London visitors but it taught us a lot about our own lovely city of Norwich that we did not know.Highly recommend it.

From the moment you step inside you will find yourself immersed in the history of Ponds shoe shop, the history of Norwich and the castle mound. Fascinating look back into Norwich’s past. Walking about in the city centre you may have no inkling of the hidden history under your feet. This was a great opportunity to take a look back in time at how the residents of Norwich used to live. Our tour guide Max made it interesting and informative - he’s a natural storyteller - and the lantern lit atmosphere added further to the whole experience. Don’t expect miles of underground tunnels, the whole tour takes place in a relatively small area, but you definitely get a flavour of old Norwich and Max’s stories helped to set the scene. Give it a go, all funds raised go to a great community cause as well.

We visited this morning for the hidden street tour as something to do on my most recent visit back to Norfolk. I grew up in Norwich and never realised the hidden streets existed beneath castle meadow so thought this would be an insightful tour. Lisa did not disappoint and was very knowledgeable on the history of the building, the business that existed there and Norwich itself. She was friendly and approachable and her enthusiasm was infectious! We hope to visit again soon with the rest of the family and try out the Tavern Tour!

Although not what I had imagined,the tour was excellent. Holly,our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining,which has encouraged me to read up about Norwich, and its history.I struggled to picture how Castle Meadow could be built above the street but all was explained.Holly was good and taking you back and being able to imagine the chaos,crowds and smells, of a previous age! Would recommend a visit and as a charity venture,I was happy with the price,for the experience.

I enjoyed the whole experience, when the guide explained how the street would be so busy with pigs and sheep, people etc. I could feel the atmosphere and hear the sounds in my mind, yes I do have a good imagination but her description helped, well worth the money

This was great. Max, not Tom, was our guide and he was so knowledgeable. I could tell you all about the tour and what was there but that would spoil the tour for other people wanting to go. You will not be disappointed.

An incredibly fun time- Holly was a fantastic tour guide! She so clearly knew the history inside out and more than encouraged questions- she was funny, engaging, and her enthusiasm was contagious. She also read the room and perfectly got what must have been a tricky balance of telling us what stories she (correctly!) thought we’d be interested in whilst being mindful of there being a child in the group and she made sure to end the tour on a light note too. Highly recommend this and the fact the money is going to a good cause is even better! It’s the kind of thing where you’ll go home and immediately want to relay some of the stories- we’re definitely planning on returning for the other tours

My wife and I did the hidden street tour during the week on a rainy day. Really good tour guide who was full of really interesting facts........ lived in Norwich for such a long time and never knew these streets existed, so it was really interesting to hear about the history of that street and the surrounding area......Good job !

Holly was such an animated guide, she brought the amazing history of this part of Norwich alive. I will definitely book further walks and talks. It was also good to learn the some of proceeds from ticket sales go towards helping the community hub too. Well worth a visit.

Very interesting Tavern Tour, Max was very knowledgeable about the history of Norwich and the Taverns, very impressed by the Cow Tower and the Swan Pit which we would never have known about if Max hadn't told us.
